This was posted in a thread on off-topic.net, someone took a picture of a snake that he found which had managed to get itself stuck in a soda can (they helped it out after taking the pictures). Some of the people on the board don't believe it's a real snake (I'm pretty sure it is). Was wondering if anyone here might be able to identify the species, since that would go a long way towards proving that it's real. Here's a link to the thread...

Some of the people in that thread are pretty ignorant about snakes...but maybe some of the experts from this site can straighten them out.

Actually the guy who took the pics lives in Thailand. Someone else posted in the thread and said it looks like a Pointed Natter (Elaphe Oxycehala) which would be more in line with the location he's in. The coloring doesn't quite look right for a speckled racer (they look more black with green highlights in the pictures I found)...hmm...

Yeah, I'm having a tough time finding any info on the web about Thai snakes too...the pictures of the Pointed Natter that I found don't really look like the snake in the pictures either
See? I don't think that's it. It does *look* more like the Speckled Racer, other than the colorings, but I doubt they have Speckled Racers in Thailand. But there's no doubt in your mind that the snake in those pictures is in fact a *real* snake (as opposed to the fake, rubber variety)?

Many snakes look like other snakes found on other continents...it's always helpful to know where a snake was found when trying to ID from just a photo. A baby taipan for example could easily be mistaken for any number of North American harmless colubrids from just a pic so it is a crucial bit of information lol

Could be...that one looks very close. Difference in color could simply be due to the lighting of the pic.

Hey Frag...you live in texas...at a first glance and not knowing where this snake came from..doesn't it look like a speckled racer to you? ...actually though...the ones in Texas probably are a lot darker...I think its down south of the border where the pretty bright green ones are.

naw, the eyes are way too big to be a drymobius, and the scales are larger on the Speck racer.
It doesnt look like one to me because Ive got a pretty deep interest in S.E. asian Colubrids, so
I guess I had that advantage.
Those are also called "flying snakes" due to the way they expand their rib cage and glide from tree to tree, or from tree to ground.
They are a ophistoglyph.
