Craigslist and animal politics

I love critters and will go out of my way to help one in need. But, I have not and will not join the likes of PETA.
The other day, there was a plea on Craigslist to sign a petition. Some person had misread a PETA site article and was saying that US pets were being taken from pounds, flown to China where their pelts would be used for clothing.
I deplore some of what I have read about the abuse of domestic animals in other countries. But with the price of gas used in airplanes these days, it is simply not economically feasible to do what she said was being done and I wrote her, saying so. She returned the note, cussing me and saying negative things about my mother.

Here is the CL post: (I did Google her cite and came up with a PETA site)

hi and good day to you reading this I live in Pa and just seen on the web that in china they are coming over here and getting our cats and dogs from the pound and taking them back to china mating them and then skinning them alive we as animal lovers need to band together and stop this please be a voice for these animals google FUR TRADE IN CHINA and go down to THE PETITION SITE and add your name if we get 20,000 names we can stop this and please pass this on

It does seem that domestic animal fur is in fact used for clothing, but I do not think they fly critters from the local pound all the way back to China. I wonder both for small companies in China and for corporations that do use this fur whether a petition would change their actions if they were making money?

Re: Craigslist and animal politics

China has more of a problem with stray cats and dogs than we do. I can hardly see them paying money, not only to fly them to China, but to get a health certificate for each and every animal, if they have an abundance over there.

I recently read an article about Beijing and their preparation for the Olympics. They're actually taking stray animals from the street and killing them, to "clean it up". It's sickening.

As Mdot pointed out the logistics of such an operation just don't add-up.
At best this is someone trying to stir-up an emotional response. At worst it's someone collecting names and email addresses and perhaps other personal information for unscrupulous reasons.

Re: Craigslist and animal politics

I've found peta to have lied many times for funding maybe they were really telling her this directly and she didn't misread it. Either way I think our dogs and cats are safe.
