Robotics
Anyone interested in robotics?
I always have been, but never really finished any projects.
I got inspired by shark week and my recent fish tank setup to try robotics again. Here is my base set up. This is pertty much a rough draft of the end result.
this is the basic movement of the "shark":
This will be accomplished by two "pistons" at the front part facing you. The pistons alternate pushing the tail sided to side, the last segment of the tail is free moving,
1: this is the straight position this is the tail moving one direction..
2. This is the tail moving the second direction.
Thanks for looking, I'll keep you guys updated.

Re: Robotics
Sort of, I wont have any control over it, the pistons pretty much would just go on their own unless someone on this fine sight would give me a link to a website with robotics parts?
Lol if you scroll real fast up and down it looks like its moving

Bimba Manufacturing
I work with air and electrical actuation equipment. We use parts from this company. They have some fairly small cylinders, but I'm not sure if they will work for you.
If you want it to work with a small plc, try Keyence.

Re: Robotics
I had the Idea of making it off balance on one side so it goes in circles, or putting an internal tube(s) with a weight in side that would roll to whichever side I wished for it to move.

Re: Robotics
You could probably use only one air cylinder to make it go in circles.
When the cylinder is extended, don't let the tail get straight. That way when it is retracted the tail will return to the same 'bent' position and the water drag on the bend will force it to turn....just a thought. A flow control valve on the input and output air to the cylinder will let you have a stronger extend or retract stroke...depending on what worked with the mechanics.
Sounds like a fun project to screw around with.

Re: Robotics
Thanks, The "rough draft" is cardboard, but the end result will be a thin plastic covered in clay and then coated in most likely something like a clear polyurethane then waterproofed.
I would like to have 2 joints, a body joint and the tail joint.
The idea of the tube(s) with the lead ball(s) in it is so I can just roll the ball to one side or the other with out changing anything internally, although it would most likely sink..
I thought it would be cool to have some little LED lights for eyes lol.
I would like to make it run on a battery because I have a lot more experience with electricity than any gas/air powered devices. But of coarse electricity + water = disaster lol

Re: Robotics
Very cool, dude.
I like the idea of robotics, but I never learned much about them, lolll. I had a robotics class scheduled in high school, but another class conflicted with it, so it had to go
But for the record- our school had a pretty sweet robotics team, haha

Re: Robotics
A little update!
I have the basic plastic base of the shark, the two joints work smoothly but no automated movment yet, I found a good sculpting clay to make the body structure out of and decided to go with a clear thin coat of silicone to water proof the clay. I might have the basic tail by tonight! Pics are a no go for now, It looks the same as the first pics but now its plastic is a forest green. Thanks!

Re: Robotics
if you bake the clay it might not need to be water proofed

Re: Robotics
For locomotion I would use shape memory alloy wire (a.k.a. muscle wire). See:
Muscle Wire or just Google muscle wire.
