wasn't the baby turtle law repealed? I thought you can buy them now, Yes, buy them even if they aren't for "educational" purposes.

Re: It finally happened...

Its always been around, people just started selling them again, cuz it wasn't enforced. Recently, they completely banned red ear sliders. Then fish and game hit Strictly Reptiles and fined them for every single baby turtle they had (even adult musk turtles that were still under 4 inches). That sent out a message to all of florida, and since they're the biggest provider of animals to reptile shops, nobody can get them anymore anyway. A lot of (crappy) shops get around that rule by selling a set up (basically a death pond with a little palm tree) with a free turtle.

I remember a few years ago when I got into the hobby, that at every show you would see them with the sign saying it was for education purposes only. But then I thought it was announced that restriction was being lifted and you can buy them as pets now.

Re: It finally happened...

Hmm I dont know to be quite honest. I think I might look into that. Pretty much everything I learn reptile-news wise comes from my boss. I do know that Strictly got fined for each and every small turtle though, and they all got confiscated (I wonder what happened to all of them ). Apparently fish and game set up an elaborate sting operation to get em too...lol. We had fish and game guys walk through our shop every week though without saying anything though before all that happened, so I dunno. I'll ask brian to elaborate next time i see him.

Re: It finally happened...

It's still in effect and never was removed. The idea is to help regulate salmonella, and people seem to think that kids won't put a turtle under 4" in their mouths..

Anyway,
People got away with it because of simple signs and everyone turned the other way on wholesellers and internet sales. Now, with Florida getting so anti on everything, old regulations are being enforced and they're hitting hard.

Red ears were hit hard in Florida simply because of interbreeding in the wild with native turtles. People were grandfathered in, but no new animals can be obtained, no hatchlings or ect. Plus rules on keeping have gotten a bit "extreme" but I guess do what you gotta do. The only sales can go out of state and permits are now needed for that.

And, you can still buy morphs.

Well the thing that can pose a problem is people just selling it to someone else and not transferring ownership or transferring permits legally. Then said person could potentially just go dump the snake.

I remember when you had me hold Olivia and say "this is what you're getting into, choose wisely"... and... now I recognize so many people that think Oh! A baby boa! so cute! wow! and it hits 6 feet and can be nippy when you only come around to feed it... and all of a sudden, that cute little bitty baby boa isn't so cute... it's a legless dinosaur looking thing...
