Identity theft
It has been an awful day. My bank account was cleaned out and overdrawn, I was just over at the police station making a report because I don't know exactly how much info has been stolen or what else can be done with it. The bank is investigating but I don't yet know exactly how the thieves got my info.
I talked to one of the bankers, I've known him for years and he is getting me set up with a new account. He says that with the hard economic times there is quite a bit of this going on.
There's not much I can do now except wait for the investigation to be completed

Re: Identity theft
I am not liable. The charges will be reversed (or removed, whatever they do but I will get my money back) on the completion of the investigation but I cannot access the account until that happens, up to 7 days they said.
My fears have to do with exactly how much info the criminals have and what further crimes they will attempt against me or using my name.

Re: Identity theft
They can't do much if you file a fraud alert with the credit bureaus, right?

Re: Identity theft
I'd make sure to run a credit report and see if they've used your identity for anything else.

Re: Identity theft
That's terrifying to me. I really hope that all is taken care of, and that it never happens to you again.
I will keep you and your family in my prayers, and I hope whoever did this gets caught!
People tend to hack computers, which is why people usually do not acess bank accounts/credit card accounts online. But I am one to blame...I do this all the time, but NEVER on a computer that isn't mine. Technically, I'm taking a risk...
...now I'm paranoid..

Re: Identity theft
That sucks a lot! I'm glad you can get your money back though. I had a friend who had her identity stolen and she lost a few thousand that she never got back.
Just to ease your mind, if you file a report on this, they redflag any suspicious activity from now on and you get alerted.

Re: Identity theft
Thank you everyone for your well wishes. This has been a big deal to me because I have heard stories of just how bad an identity theft can be, today.
I of course have been checking my online banking every few hours. Good news and bad news. The good news is that the bank has credited back one of the two charges. I will go over to my local bank tomorrow to see what they found.
The bad news, is that the bureaucracy looks like it has not caught up with the fact that I had no part in this, and they charged me overdraft fees on the fraudulent charges made to my account.

Re: Identity theft
That sucks so much, hopefully your bank account gets worked out, bt in the mean time, get a credit check done to see if any new accounts have been opened in your name. If so, alert the credit company that you did not open them. Thats the biggest problem that somebody could open accounts in your name, charge ridiculous amounts, and then never pay. So get a credit check and there should be a way to alert the credit bureaus to not allow any new accounts to be opened unless you call them directly.

Re: Identity theft
I was lurking on the site and I saw this. I am horrified for you. It's a wonder this doesn't happen more often with all of the information we have flying around. I hope you are able to resolve this, and that the thief is caught. Did you give out any bank account information over the internet lately?
