Don't support heart breaking commercials
Sarah McLachlan and the new A.S.P.C.A. commercial has been pulling at my strings lately. Luckily a quick search renewed my beliefs in not supporting the A.S.P.C.A.
I hope you will all join me and support local reptile rescues and wildlife centers who believe in our community instead of the A.S.P.C.A.
ASPCA: Adopt: Exotics as Pets
Please pass this on to other reptile sites you visit.

Re: Don't support heart breaking commercials
Some things pointed out in the article are true for reptiles. The problem is, they are equally true for dogs and cats. That is, that there are folks who keep both dogs and cats in terrible, unhealthy environments. That doesn't mean we should ban the keeping of them all. I'm continually reading news articles, even in my small community about folks who get busted for keeping dogs, cats and horses in unhealthy, starved conditions.
Whoever wrote this article obviously has never kept a reptile. I guarantee that if you released a group of dogs and cats into a wild environment suitable for them to survive, the cats would thrive without humans and the dogs would form packs and quickly adapt to their environment.
The captive reptile industry may well be the only future hope for keeping certain animals from becoming extinct.

Re: Don't support heart breaking commercials
Typical, it's all-too similar to the 'policies' that the SPCA up here's trying to force on my Province. Luckily, they aren't allowed having any part in picking what people can and cannot have as pets.. law's still being worked out, and we're fighting tooth and nail not to have too many harsh restrictions slapped across our hobby.

Re: Don't support heart breaking commercials
Well for one thing, they're idiots, and a lot of the stuff they said in there is rediculous. I can agree with one thing thought -- sometimes I wish people couldn't keep exotics as pets. 80% of the people that keep snakes and lizards and whatnot are not responsible like the people on this board. I work at a pet shop, and you wont believe some of the stuff I see. People really just dont care about their animals...they just see them as an object, and once they get bored of it, its not worth their time anymore, and they neglect and abuse the poor thing. I dont wish exotics were banned, I just wish idiots couldnt keep them (aka-90% of the population). *sigh*

Re: Don't support heart breaking commercials
I think that people should have to go through screening to own exotics (to an extent).
I mean, in TX they are now forcing us to buy a permit to own 6 or 7 (can't remember) species of larger pythons, plus all non-indigenous hots.
They don't screen. You just go to Walmart and buy it for 20 bucks. You can do it while you get groceries for the week. It doesn't make a difference honestly. If people are going to be careless, they're still going to be careless; they'll just have a permit this time.

But it IS a form of deterrent. True, it won't make a HUGE difference, but if it stops ONE person from getting an animal that has no business owning one then it worked.

Re: Don't support heart breaking commercials
They're barking in the dark. There are thousands of statements like that floating around. It's just propaganda. Nothing to get feathers ruffled over.
How many people actually listen to the ASPCA or any other agency? Few to nearly none. Look at GreenPeace... I have a hippie friend that chains herself to gaspumps and trees....all an effort in futility. She spends her summers on a boat fighting against whale-poaching...it still happens. No one listens. no one cares.
A year or two ago...we (this site) were on an anti-Petco craze and added many signatures to a petition against them....who won? Who knows. It's just propaganda.
