Electricity costs: Enough is enough, already
I have a tiny home but it is older so not energy efficient. And my compressor needs to be replaced one of these days.
I've done insulation and stuff, but my last light bill was $550 and I have had enough of working for the light company.
My son will visit next week and we are going to get a large room AC which uses less watts that the central, and is much less expensive to run. That will supplement the central until I can re-do the entire AC system.
I am not ranting too much, at least I am employed and have food and shelter. I just can't imagine how the folks in Texas who are truly destitute survive what with fuel and electricity costs.
I know people have in the past lived without electricity or AC, and I've done that several times for a week at a time (usually after a hurricane knocks out the power in the area) and it is a miserable existence indeed.

Wow, what the heck are you using to have it that high? Do you have a lot of stuff turned on during the day? How low do you have the AC set?
I live in the Phoenix area (113 outside right now) and my electric bills are still in the $80 range. AC set to 79 when at work and 75 when at home.

Re: Electricity costs: Enough is enough, already
Holy Cow, I live in Houston, Texas and only pay $120 and I think that is too high. Working for the electric company indeed.

Re: Electricity costs: Enough is enough, already
Mine runs about 200 or so. But we've constantly got the tv on and heating for the snakes and the saltwater tank and any number of other things, so we earn it, lol.

Re: Electricity costs: Enough is enough, already
When I lived further south in a large, older house it was less expensive for me to use high-efficiency, small window units then it was to run the inefficient central A/C unit. There was no need to cool the entire house and usually I just cooled the TV room in the evening after work and the bed room at night. Much of the time I started the bedroom A/C about a half hour before going to bed and left if off overnight.

Re: Electricity costs: Enough is enough, already
mine is crazy in the summer, 90% of my snakes can't get over 80 degrees and still be comfortable, and I only have a central AC, so it pretty much runs about 18 hours a day in the summer, and the house is over 2000sq ft, and older.
I do know alot of utility companies rates went up nearly 30% in the last year too, it just may not be reflecting on everyone's bills just yet.
I used less electricity last month than I did the same month the year prior, and my bill was over 100 more.
UGH
