Gas prices=pet crisis
Sad story. See the news link. I wonder if it will affect reptiles in the same way. I don't doubt it.

It's so sad. I'm having to speed up the search for new homes for some of the fosters in my care because the cost of just keeping them is starting to be too much.

I haven't really felt the bite of gas prices directly, yet.. I don't own a vehicle and walk to work, but I'm sure I'm gonna feel it when I order my stock supply of rats for my animals.. 
Even then, I can't ever imagine giving up my pets, ever.... I'd work my rear end off to compensate, and be able to provide for them.. they're part of my family, and if I got it in my head to give them up, it'd be just like giving a kid away or something. Not happening. |

The effects of the raising gas prices are more far-reaching than that, affecting every aspect of pet care. Not just on the owners end.
This time of the year, last year, we averaged about 22 people volunteering on the weekend adoption fair. This year, we are averaging 8 people. The reason is simple: we simply can't afford to drive to random petsmarts in the North Bay anymore.
In addition to that, there's been a dramatic decrease on foster homes, potentional adopters, and many more. We usually had about 20 Huskies in our shelter, nowdays we have an average of 45 and that numer is steadily increasing. We are forced to re-evaluate our status as a no-kill rescue.
Our local SPCA has seen a steady decrease in volunteers, and we are meeting budget far more quickly now so policy changes are being discussed to put the burden of the cost on the adopters. However that will, of course just begin a vicious cycle of people not wanting to adopt because it's too expensive.
It goes on and on and on. Until the economy changes, you will likely see many, many, many more dogs, cats, reptiles being put to sleep. Being able to care for our animals, and to love our animals as we do, is indeed a luxury we have as a first world country.
Here's to hoping for change.

I recommend the Ramen and frozen burrito diet, I have been on it for 4 years, so I can keep my animals fed and housed properly.

LOL, ive been down that road before too  not too bad, but it does get boring. the gas prices wont affect our ability to feed and house the snakies though  they are by far the cheapest of all our animals

My snakes and lizards are not cheap to feed, the cat costs far less.
