I had mites and killed them with pro zap and black knight. I was informed how black knight works so well and i know where i can get it cheep. I haven't seen any mites since. whay i did was remove my snakes, fogged a tote with black knight placed the reptile in there with them. while this was going on i put a HUGE dose of prozap in the tank for about and hour. then i removed the pro zap and let the tank air out. then i fogged with black knight and put my snakes back in their tanks and replaced the water. all of the mites were dead and i never saw them again! Black knight = good stuff many big breederes like proexotics and Bob Clark use it.

I apologize i didn't read all of the previous post! I have used seven dust, Black knight, and prozap. I haven't needed to try POM or sawyers yet. (Haven't had any mites since) The bottom line is a chemical is being used to KILL a insect which is very tough and unless you are dedicated enough to use mineral oil a risk is being taken. no matter what is or isn't proved a chemical death is a risky death. Anything can be proven "harmful" or "safe" if use under particular conditions. Maybe someone needs to re-lable BK. my 2 cents

LOL...I like the little kits of Sawyers products they sell at Walmart. It comes with 2 other pesticides...one is a lotion and the other is a pump spray and of course a can of Tick aerosol spray. All 3 are handy for herping trips but only use the tick spray for your reptiles. The other 2 are for keeping bugs off you...I forgot what the active ingredient is but it isn't permetherin... And even at 9 bucks for the kit...that is still half the price of a single can of Proventamite. </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>

Ticks are nasty critters and can transmit several diseases to humans. Mites are bad enough, but ticks can be dangerous. If I can shamelessly plug a site you may find interesting, try http://permethrin-repellent.com which has information about ticks and their diseases and about Permethrin.

The other Insect Repellent ingredient you refer to is Deet. N,N-diethyl-m-Toluamide is a man made chemical and has been used worldwide as an insect repellent since the 1950s. No other chemical has been found to match Deet's effectiveness and safety as a repellent against mosquitoes and ticks, and some flies.

Sawyer's Broad Spectrum Spray also contains an additional ingredient, R326, which is even more effective at repelling biting flies than Deet alone. The Controlled Release lotion is a repellent which releases small amounts of Deet over many hours, and usually a single application on the skin will last all day. Just to explain the other Insect Repellents in that 3 Pack.

ROFL. Unfortunately I do have to be careful what I say. The EPA and state agencies are undergoing a budget crunch and are looking for ways to make money. Those agencies can fine companies tens of thousands of dollars for suggesting the use of a product for which it is not specifically approved --- and for which the Registration Fees have not been paid. Prevent-A-Mite went through the process and no doubt pays annual expensive EPA Registration Fees. Those went up again this year, sometimes 50% increase or more over last year. And PAM is patented for the particular method of using Permethrin to treat reptile cages. Sawyer nor Coulston would want to infringe on that patent.

It's ok Limey. I don't think any of us here wants for anyone to be fined or harrassed by the feds. We just want what everyone else wants...Healthy animals and to save a buck.

ok to start this off I would like to commend everyone that has posted to this forum. This is a prime example of why this site is in existence.

I have used BK in the past. I was told be other in the herp field that it was safe and easy to use. Well to my dissapointmnet I foun dout differently. I followed there direction to the tee. fogging the cage while thier water bowl was out and cleaning the cages the next day. So I went out and bought a whole case of Bk. well to make a long story short I lost an anertheristic columbian rainbow and a very beuatiful brb. Since then I use Bk very sparingly to say the least. I use it now for the carpet and never in the cages at all. I have got to admit it did work, heck it worked to darned good it killed 2 of my snakes also. Geuss I do not have to worry about mites on them anymore.

I geuss the best advice to give in the situation is not to believe averything you hear. I trusted some people and it costed me dearly. These were people prominant in our field I would like to add.. Before you decide what form of mite irradication to use please do your homework.

these were the two that I lost because of BK
