Ticks are just overgrown steroid mites anyway. LOL...I like the little kits of Sawyers products they sell at Walmart. It comes with 2 other pesticides...one is a lotion and the other is a pump spray and of course a can of Tick aerosol spray. All 3 are handy for herping trips but only use the tick spray for your reptiles. The other 2 are for keeping bugs off you...I forgot what the active ingredient is but it isn't permetherin... And even at 9 bucks for the kit...that is still half the price of a single can of Proventamite.

Here's those products Juls..

I also have been purchasing it at Walmart in that 3 pak. YUP..It comes in handy for those that go camping too. Think I pay $10.99 here for it though. Still getting a LOT more for my $$ and some extra benefit when purchased this way. My kids can go through a TON of those other two products that come with the tick spray I use for reptile habitats.
The one called broad spectrum is labeled as for mosquitos, ticks and biting flies. The other one, the cream, is labeled for time release and also application to face, nack area etc. The major active ingredient in both of them is : N.N-DIETHYL-M-TOLUAMIDE.

Question........

What if Black Knight is used the same way as everyone uses PAM and Sawyers. Seeing as the active ingredient in both products is similar and from the same family of chemicals?
I do have Black Knight and despite what the instructions and recommendations say.... I DO NOT, WILL NOT, AND NEVER EVER HAVE sprayed it directly on any of the animals in our household, scaled or furry. (I take part of that back... I did spray a few spiders in the garage with it ) I do however pre-treat EVERYTHING that comes from a pet store and all substrate before it comes in to the house with the Black Knight. I have not seen any negative reactions to anything that was pre-treated nor have I seen any mites since I started doing this but I am not a scientist and have not run extensive testing to find out if the product is or is not harming the animals. I typically will allow substrate to "air" out for a day or more after treating before I will use it though.
I ask this more for personal knowledge and to hear the opinions... I have about half a can left and when that is gone I intend to use the Sawyers as it is a lot less expensive and easier to obtain than Black Knight.

Great post FloridaLimey. Oh And welcome to RTB. Welcome to you too Bob sorry I didnt earlier.
It sounds as if FloridaLimey is in the know about the Sawyers products. Just curious if this is from hearsay on his/her part, or is this party directly involved somehow with Sawyers, or their chemical company? If identifying yourself would get you busted with the company I would definately understand, but if you are a rep of some kind, it would bring allot more credability to your post. Even though what you posted is our beliefs anyway.

OK folks -- now for the OFFICIAL word straight from Charles Feller of Coulston Products. I will note that Coulston is now a sister company of Sawyer (i.e. it is now Sawyer/Coulston) and that Chas Feller is one of the developers of Permethrin:

(Quote)
Coulston Products Incorporated is the manufacturer and EPA registrant
for the Sawyer Products' "Permethrin Tick Repellent" and Pro Products'
"Prevent-a-Mite" pressurized sprays. Prevent-a-Mite has directions
for use, Federal and State registrations and patented to control
(parasitic) mites in reptile environments. Sawyer's Permethrin Tick
repellent has directions for use and Federal and State registrations for
application on human clothing. To sell and/or use Sawyer's Permethrin
Tick Repellent on reptiles is in violation for Federal law and US
Patent. To use Prevent-a-Mite on clothing is a violation of Federal
law. Whilst each product contains permethrin, an insecticide, they are
TWO DIFFERENT products with different use patterns and applications.
The difference is expressed in the EPA registration number 50404-6-58188
(Sawyer) versus 50404-7-73617 (Prevent-a-Mite).

We do not promote anyone to market, sell or use Sawyer Permethrin Tick
Repellent on reptiles because of violation of Federal and State laws,
violation of US Patent and potential harm that may come to a reptile for
mis-application of another product.
