Re: Favorite snake to keep?
I kept a large (7') banded Egyptian cobra for a couple of years back in the day. It and a few other things like that belonged to a friend who was unavailable to care for them...
.
I'm not speaking of Egyptian cobras (or any hot snake) in general as being favourite snakes or good pets because they are not! THIS particular snake ranks as my all-time favourite snake-in-a-cage.
.
The snake was active and extremely intelligent.. used every part of the cage. The varied shapes and sizes and colors of the scales on him added a depth of interest to the snake not matched by many snakes. Though deadly and I always treated it with that respect ... there was never a sense of imminent danger or lack of control..
.
The only drawback was the near daily cleaning that goes with keeping an animal like this.. installing a latching cage separator is the answer I used to make the routine stuff like cleaning go quickly with zero risk. For me, in a non-venomous snake the only thing that comes close to that animal is a large well-adjusted tropical Drymarchon sp..
.
Now.. the Black forest cobras and East African mambas! .. that is a different story all together!
.
Good topic.

Re: Favorite snake to keep?
My all time favorite snake that i have had was my pair of olive pythons. they were the most curious snakes ive ever had. alot of people thought they were aggressive that didnt know them b/c anytime you came to there cages to get them out they would be waiting at the top. people thought they were coming up to bite them. when in fact they just loved to be handled and move around. they were also the most verocious eaters i have ever seen. I like them more than any of the hots i have had or big snakes i kept too.

Re: Favorite snake to keep?
Morelia all the way!
As others have said, all my snakes are cool in their own ways, and I like keeping a range of species because it's neat to observe the different personalities and behaviors and quirks they all have.
But as far as favorites go, definitely my carpets. It's a combination of their alert personalities, their looks, and the variety between the different species and subspecies. I love watching their colors and patterns emerge as they grow, I love their killer feeding response, and that head! Just beautiful, awesome snakes all around. And with a much undeserved bad rep, if you ask me. They aren't ball pythons, and I think you have to be just a touch more on guard with them, but that all adds to their appeal IMO. They are far from the frenzied monsters they are sometimes made out to be.
