In my own personal note, I feel stupid and I got worried not Scared, When I but my 6' bci around my neck one day after doing so she grab a hold it got uncomfortably snug. I will let her climb onto my shoulders but I try to keep her away from my neck at all times.
I too know that they are pure muscle, But A person does't not realize how much force there is behind them.
Just because they seem to be smaller in dia. there is more muscle in a snake than us.
Also they can controll their muscles much better, and much faster than us.
this is my point also

I agree

That pretty much sums up my earlier post about tough-guy talk.
.
Anyway.. don't fight with your boas! or place them around your neck (while doing chin-ups or not)! That's bad form..
.
Best to you!

Re: How many of you follow the 6 foot rule

Gus I fight my boa and python every time I try to get them out of the cage. It is such a hassle, I have honestly thought about taking out all their branches. No tough guy talk here, just tired of getting pulled into cages by animals I out weigh by 100+lbs

Interesting point icicle I watched the show on the discovery channel called "Human body pushing the limits" that showed in a life or death situation a human can use all of it's muscle fibers to perform amazing feats unlike the small percentage we normally use. So perhaps you could free your self from a large snake still not a risk I am willing to take, and Morti might have more to say about this.

Re: How many of you follow the 6 foot rule

I have pulled 9' of coiled Anaconda off of me before by myself. It is a matter of knowing HOW to remove a large constrictor much moreso than your strength. No 6' or 7' constrictor should ever come close to taking out a keeper in my opinion.

Of course, there are venomous keepers, not much gray area there. Then again, dogs are potentially deadly animals as well and take many more lives each year than herps. Just because an animal is potentially dangerous does not mean that the keeper is crazy...

Ok, that's reasonable.. perhaps I could have been more clear. I'm talkng about a real expectation of serious injury or death, not simply the 'potential' for trouble.
.
The bathtub is statistically a most dangerous thing we have in our homes (even for those who keep six foot boas).. it sounds like I'm joking but I'm not.. bathtubs kill people. Six foot pet snakes (even ones much larger) are not even on a list of the top threats to people in their homes. Yet most of us don't think it needed to have a buddy help us bathe! We learned how to bathe when we were kids and have been trusted to do it safely since.
.
.. and yes, if you or anybody got their heart in their throat and had palpitations every time they went to clean cages (or bathe!) and didn't give it up, then there would be serious questions about your sanity.
.
Those new to the experience of handling larger snakes (6,7,8') should start out by having an experinced helper! Are inexperienced people buying larger snakes.. cold turkey? That's a problem by itself. But I do still believe that classifying modest sixed snakes like a six-foot boa as serious threats to human life is nuts (voodoo).
.
Thanks for the chance to discuss these issues..

I don't recall anyone ever stating or even inferring that they do or should be afraid of their snakes. Only that they should take precautions when dealing with them.

Some people honestly don't know or grasp how dangerous a relatively small snake can be.

I think everyone here knows very well and has seen the pictures that I seem to post once a month or so of the retic that killed my friend Patrick. Simply put, if Patrick had not attempted to handle his 11 foot retic by himself, he would be alive today. LdyDrgn and I had both personally told Patrick to be careful with his retics.

I don't want anyone to live in fear of their snake, but at the same time, I don't want anyone to completely write off the risk as minimal either. Writing off risks is part of what leads to accidents happening. Accidents with giant snakes can kill you.
