Milestones

We all have milestones in our lives, events that are set apart from everyday living. Births, deaths, marriages, divorces, first homes, first boyfriend/girlfriend and similar events.
Some, like death, are beyond our control; others, like marriage, are carefully planned.

After my children graduated high school, I decided to attend school. This had been a long time dream, as I had set aside this education decades ago to instead concentrate on home and family.
It was at times difficult being an older student, especially since for most of the time I was working full time as well as going to school. Sometimes I wondered whether I should have taken on such a challenge later in life.

Today, I graduate. A milestone.

I want to encourage each of you who are struggling with your own goals: if it is worthwhile, it generally isn't easy; but reaching self set goals can be one of life's more important milestones both for the satisfaction it brings you, and for the example you set for your children and others who themselves have goals to reach.

This is truly a milestone indeed, and you should be quite proud. After dropping out of grad school many years ago, I never found the energy to finish my advanced degree. I know what it involves, and I admire the hard work and determination. Congratulations, and I hope you celebrate hard!

I just want you to know that you are an AMAZING woman for making that happen for yourself. My mother will be graduating next year at 43. She had to drop out of college when she had me at 20, and she spent the next 20 years of her life as a single mother working her butt off for everything she has ever owned or earned. She has always been my role model and I have strived to achieve her dedication and maintain the work ethic she taught me.

You are amazing, and I am so happy for you. You and my mother give me so much strength and faith in the fact that if I want something badly enough, and I work hard enough, anything is possible.
