Rodent Pro
I heard a lot of great things about RodentPro.com so I thought I would order some XXXLarge Rats. Good deal on the rats. 10 for 19.98. Then the calculation for the s/h charges. OMG! S&H: $71.09* I think I will buy locally.

Re: Rodent Pro
I've not done business with RodentPro.com, but you can't blame them for the high cost of shipping. As gas prices increase, so will shipping costs.

To a certain degree I understand the gas price issue. Like I said, I will just buy my rats locally.

Re: Rodent Pro
if your going to order rodents from an out of state source, its really pointless to order such a small quantity.
Fuel surcharges, and distance, combined with many using dry ice increases the weight, not to mention they have to be shipped by a overnight service.
the rodent breeders don't set the shipping charges

Bingo! The only way to make frozen feeder purchases make sense economically is to buy in enough bulk to get the ultimate per/rat price down to less than you'd pay locally.
As an emotional buffer (to soften the blow of the shipping) calculate the per item price of a large order, and it's still cheaper than going to the pet store and buying them. And the more you buy, the cheaper each rat will be.

Re: Rodent Pro
Rodentpro has a snazzy feature that is part of their shopping cart that tells you how much box space you have left.
Breezie, based on your location, you are correct:
5 bags if xxxl rats = 19.90
UPS service = 71.09
Total = 90.99
That's 9.09 per rat!
If you had ordered 23 bags of xxxl rats = 91.54
Greyhound shipping = 75.00
Total = 166.54
That's $3.62 per rat.... Much Better!
This is why it is a very good idea to find some local herpers in your area and split orders. Not only can you get the quantity discount sometimes, you can also save a TON of money on shipping.
If you have a local herp society, join it!

Re: Rodent Pro
I no longer buy locally 'cuz of how ridiculously overpriced the rats are. They charge me $4.99 for a pup, yeah.. no thanks.
What I do, is I order once or twice a year.. more than likely gonna be twice a year now, with the amount of snakes I have. About $400+ in rats, costs me $78 in shipping, heck of a lot cheaper once it's worked out, than buying the things here.
On top of that, the quality I get from my breeder is spot-on. My friend and I both agree that we aren't buying from anyone else anymore.. lol, been spoiled by quality too much. If you were in Canada, I'd recommend FalconRidge farms, in Saskatchewan to any Canadian herper.
