Re: More Craigslist stupidity
That is about the most knowledgeable about reptiles I've ever seen on craigslist... Of course that isn't saying anything...

Re: More Craigslist stupidity
Craigslist makes me so ANGRY!!! I can't even go on there anymore. It has now become aplace to "sell" pets and call it a rehoming fee. Why these people feel they deserve just as much money as they put into the pets, I will never know. I've ranted about this before, but I feel like these people feel like someone who has money, would better care for an animal.....but there are plenty of whack jobs with money. And in most cases, these animals need to be taken to a vet and theres more money the adopter has to put out.
I have wanted to petition Craigslist for a long time to just not allow pet adoptions, unless its through a valid rescue group who puts up the ad. Craigslist gives people an easier way to "recycle" animals.....For some reason, some of these people posting ads on CL, either had no idea what they were getting into...hence the ball and boa kept together.....or they have no idea that a pet should be for life...don't get one if you are always moving or are thinking about children, and want your child to be deprived of the love of a pet. i.e. dog, cat, gecko.......
Oy vay, sorry for the tangent.

Re: More Craigslist stupidity
I am in no way defending this guy, but when asking for experience, he probably doesn't realize how wrong it is to keep them together. I know when I got my first boa, I took what the petstore told me as the gospel truth. Later I came to realize how wrong I was to listen to them. Maybe this guy is misinformed and if he doesn't recognize what a snake looks like in poor health, then he wouldn't know that there is a problem. Like I said, I am not defending him, but I can see someone interested in snakes in a petstore, a salesman coming up and saying, "blah blah blah" and a guy leaving thinking he knows just how to care about them. I got interested in learning more about them, that is how I progressed and learned correct husbandry, someone who thinks they are in the right that doesn't have that drive to learn all they can about their animal won't know if they are wrong. After all the petstore people are suppose to be experts. Until you get into the hobby, you don't realize that most of the time petstore staff don't know squat!
And before anyone starts to say, well a responsible owner will know everything there is to know about their snakes, or a true responsible person will research long before they buy a snake, that doesn't apply to someone who is casually into the hobby. It is the best way to go, but I don't think it is reasonable to expect every first time snake owner to do such things. I have two cats that I have had for almost 13 years. Other than basic care of feeding, watering, changing the liter box, I don't know a think about nutritional needs, how their sense of smell works, why the fixed male likes to get busy with dirty socks.... Not even close to the volume of info I learned about snakes, but that was after I got into it and wanted to learn more and more about them.
This craigslist guy is wrong on so many levels, co-habbing, co-species co-habbing, size of enclosure, etc...; but before taking up the torches and pitchforks, maybe we should take a deep breath and thank God that we aren't at the place of being misinformed like this guy is. Plus, a few friendly emails about care might be alot more productive then "Hey Stupid!"
Just IMO.

Hartsock, I agree with everything you said except this. I DO think it's reasonable, should even be REQUIRED to research before purchase, at time of purchase, and for years AFTER purchase, ESPECIALLY for "The First." Is it likely? No. Did some of us honestly start out like this moron? Yes (Guilty to a degree). Did we learn? Most of us did, yes.

I agree to a point Tom, I think it is ideal, but until every petstore/breeder/wholesaler would require that, then it is impossible. Especially when the people selling them don't know half of what they need to. I think of that every Easter when I go to the petstore and see all the bunnies, or the feed store and see all the bunnies, chicks, and ducklings (lol, don't call those things snake food around a bunch of 6 year olds, parents doen't seem to like that.) You know that most of those animals are bought and aren't going to get the special car | |
