Plus I've had each of your listed species, and the large crocodilians tend to be more of a handful than the rest, not that that's bad or anything.

Not to mention they can eat you!

Re: Hardest reptile species to keep

I couldn't vote for the animals I've never kept before because I wouldn't know the degree of difficulty. If I had the right set ups and land for them, maybe they wouldn't be so hard to keep you know?
I can only go by what I KNOW to vote...

Re: Hardest reptile species to keep

I said iguanids, hehe. Cutting up veggies every day really got tiresome after a while. Plus my male green ig would turn into a raging meany every summer and try to eat me (not really, but he would just be aggressive). So they're not hard per say, just a lot of work (compared to everything else I've kept), and very little love when breeding season rolls around, Lol.

Seriously though, I would say crocs too. My boyfriend keeps them, and just baby dwarf that we had was a glimpse into the future.

Re: Hardest reptile species to keep

there should be a none of the above

taking up more space or having to eat alot doesn't make a species more difficult to keep.
maybe on the wallet, or the spare room.

but not overall

Re: Hardest reptile species to keep

A lot of people find it hard keeping an adult Nile crocodile.

Finding help, finding cash, finding space are perfect reasons to consider the difficulty level of a species. The animal itself may not be hard to keep, but keeping it may be. Which, makes the animal difficult to keep.

Re: Hardest reptile species to keep

I agree with KrokadilyanGuy3: it is not just the money and space. It is the 15 foot croc that wants to bite your arm off, the Iguana that will whip you every summer, the retic that takes two people to be present for the smallest amount of cleaning, or the monitor that will vomit at the site of you or charge you with a nasty septic bite or good old fashion bone breaking tail whip.

Though space and money play a big part on who can care for what, they are not the biggest part in my opinion. Personal safety, and keeping the animal healthy and stress free as well as getting reliable information on a species is what I find makes them so difficult.

Re: Hardest reptile species to keep

This is a difficult question to answer as much depends on the personalities of the individual animals, enclosure design and several other factors.
I would have to go with medium size crocodilians and being the most difficult in general. The smaller species can put a hurting on you but in general can't kill you. The larger crocodilians with all their mass are for the most part, a bit on the slow side. Medium size crocodilians, like the Cuban crocodile, is small enough to be lightning fast, agile enough to make 5-6 vertical jumps and is still large enough to kill you.
