I've had gay friends all my life! I LOVE gay clubs! Where else can a lady dance all night and not have skeezy guys trying to pick her up?
One of my best friends when I was a kid turned out to be gay and two of my three best friends in high school were gay (and very brave to be open about it since I grew up in farm country).
It definitely gave me a window into the world outside small-town life growing up and going to gay coffee shops in 'the big city' (Grand Rapids, MI) and everything when I was a teen.
