This weekend, I went to water everyone and found one of my snakes AWOL And no, it was not a hot It was a pretty little Speckled Kingsnake. He was in the large caging system (not a Precision) and i guess when we were moving it, we must have knocked a rear vent loose and not noticed it. I tore the basement apart looking for the little traveller to no avail. So I laid out my flour lines on each wall, around the furnace and hot water heater and used it to divide the basement into kindof a grid. If he moves, i will know. I also made a standard funnel style snake trap and set it next to the furnace baited with a mouse. i think he is the only snake i own that bait will actually work.
Here is the kicker. I keep every nice looking shed from my hots to give away at educational programs and the like. After rearranging, i had some of them on the floor. While looking for the king, I found a small 1.5" piece of Canebrake shed torn up pretty bad. I looked around and ALL of the venomous sheds that had been on the floor were gone! That little scumbag ate all my sheds!!!
Needless to say, I threw a couple copperhead sheds in the trap to bait it Hope we find hime soon.

Is there a chance that you might have some rodent visitors in your snake room?
That would be a stupid rodent going in there but that could possibly explain the sheds.
Our cats will steal a shed if they get a chance and eat it.... one of them protects the sheds like he would protect a nice meaty turkey leg. All hunched down and growling.
Good luck on the snake hunt!!!!

Just thought of an amusing scenerio about all this. You have some person new to snakes down in your basement, and they are a little nervous about all of the hots, so you are explaining all of the cage locks and safety prctices involved and what would happen if one bit you or whatever.....and all of the sudden you notice a "pretty little speckled kingsnake" crawling on their shoulder from the cabinet next to them. You no there is no way in the world the person can ve hurt by the little fellow, but you also know your nervous little friend will FREAK OUT if you tell them....so very non-chalantly you grab the little guy off of them .......ahhh I am laughing at the thought now....hehehe. I just picture my mom in that scenerio and roll.
Ok, I would like to end with the fact that I have been under a lot of Holiday stress and have not had coffee yet, but I amused myself.
Good luck finding the little one Brian.

Actually...had it been a hot...it would have been easier to find. The hot room over there is pretty tight. the non hot area in the main part of the basement however has the needle in a hay stack factor going on. At any rate...I don't think anything escaping down there on either side of the basement would ever work it's way upstairs to the main part of the house.

GREAT to hear that ! I have never had the chance to see his "hot" room at all, so wouldn't have known such [ Wouldn't have thought otherwise either though..BW seems to be a "responsible" keeper etc..esp in the area of hots].
Sooo brian.. Have you ever had a ven escape it's caging at all even..and what were the circumstances around it..like how it escpaed and when/how found ?
