I think Silence is the most beautiful language in the world!!! Not French, although maybe it comes a close second.
Just joking - Silence can be very, very scary and dangerous!!!

Re: Languages
I speak, read, write understand American english and that's about it. But I do have the uncanny ability to understand people with a thick scottish accent.
However when placed in a scenario with a language barrier. I just glare into the eyes of others until my will is understood.

Re: Languages
I am fluent in English, and I have to thank my high school ESL teacher for that, and I'm also fluent in Spanish, being my first language, but I've forgotten a lot of words i don't use often, and that's when the spanglish kicks in. And just last month I bought the Japanese cd for The Rosetta Stone, I just need the time to try it and see if it works.

Re: Languages
You can never learn a language like Japanese on your own. As native-speaker, it has too many cultural references, without learning Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji, it will be extremely difficult to understand why that word is said like it is. And, if you only speak Spanish and English, grammar and syntax will be #$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^& for you.
Shouldn't waste money on those kinda stuff.

Never say never, everything is possible in this world. Some people have learned some of the basics this way, so I'll give it a shot.

Re: Languages
just say I warned you. ironically the basics is the hardest in this language. you need to know at least 2000 characters to be considered "minimally" literate.
but better than the Rosetta Stone is the Manga, yes they are childish and some may not even be that interesting, but the language is cutting edge and different from standard Japanese. It's very modern, you have a better chance there.
