I was wondering how does one start a herp. rescue. I live in a county that has no herp rescue, But we do have an animal shelter but I have never seen any thing exrotic in there just mainly dog and cat.
Thank you.

Re: how to start a
contact your local fish and wildlife. They will point you in the right direction. You need startup capital rescues are expensive to run and don't pay except for small adoption fees.

Re: how to start a
BoaGuy is right, unfortunately. From what little I know about rescues, it takes ALOT of time/energy/money to start one up and keep it going. Do you know if there is even a NEED for a herp rescue in your area? Can you see if the domesticated shelters will amend to allow reptiles as well and bring you on for that?

you might also want to do some research on grants.. i know there are government grants you can get for small non profit organizations such as a rescue shelter.. all it takes is writting a letter and explaining it all in detail and them approving or not. search the web about them, it may take a little digging but they are out there.

Start with passion. It's darn sure all you'll end with. Then do some deep soul searching and make sure you're not just trying to get free snakes, and/or that you'll be able to part with them once you've nursed them back to health. Then get a lot of money, cages, and feeders. Next find a really good herp vet. One who's willing to accept payments when you run out of money, but keep having rescues come in. Or at least pro-rate his fees since you are a rescue. Finish by developing a thick skin.
Not that I've done rescue...it's just years of observation.
