Looking for a cool christmas present to treat myself with. Does anyone know of a good book on Boas. I would probably have to order in on line, somewhere like amazon.com.
(a detailed book with anatomy, history, general care, breeding etc. Doesn't have to be specifically on Red Tail's. but just boas in general).

You might want to catch skadiwolf in chat sometime. She found a great book on amazon.com about boas, but I can't remember thename, only that the author was vosjoli(her spelling, not mine). She also named another book by the same author.

Got a printer?
Just print this:
All about boas by Julius F. Squeezer
Boas are cool snakes. They have lottsa teeth...220 last I counted. They make good pets and are fairly easy to keep if you can handle the size. Mine like to sleep a lot. My mom won't ever come over to visit because they are here. Did I mention boas are cool snakes?

Don't bother with What's Wrong with my Snake. The book is relatively useless. All pics are black and white, and the ultimate answer you get for any problems is: Take it to a vet (DUH!!) Also, the drug chart in the back is only for smaller bodied snakes, such as colubrids. Forget it if you need dosage info for a boid! If you have any concerns, your best bet would be to come here and ask questions and not wasting time and money and that book. The Boa Constrictor Manual is a good one, but please keep in mind that many of the older books are out of date and I have seen Vosjoli documenting inaccurate information in his other books. What makes this one ok is that it is co-written by the Boaphile himself, Jeff Ronne.

I do not agree with ldydrgn on the What's Wrong with my Snake book.
It does have a drug chart for bigger snakes. Look at page 75. It has a list from 10 lbs. to 200 lbs.
Let's say you have a boa that is 12 lbs. and you need to give it a shot of Amikacin.
1st. you look up 10 lbs. in the "Large Snake Antibiotic Chart" and see you need .23 ml
2nd. you look up 2 lbs. in the "Small Snake Antibiotic Chart" and see you need 0.045 ml
3rd. Add the two up and you get 0.275 ml this is what you need for a 12 lbs boa.
However if you have a big problem with your snake or any reptile you should take it to a good reptile Vet.
In the event you can not afford the cost of going to the Vet then maybe you should not own any reptile at all.
I do not want to get anyone mad at me but I am so tried of seeing people that should not have any
reptiles or any pets at all to take care of.
This is why you see so many reptile rescues out there.
If I have something wrong with any of my boas that I can not take care of I take them to my Vet immediately.
I do not worry about the cost of the Vet bill because my boas health mean more to me than my money.

I don't much care for that book either. It is vague and ...I dunno...just not much help really. I also have a problem with drug dosages being given per lb of animal..too many people guess at the weight and / or round up or down to the nearest lb. I will not even talk to anyone about drug dosage untill they tell me in grams or kg an exact weight.
I just picked up a really cool book the other day...not specifically about boas or even snakes...but quite a handy little reference book....it is the Oxford Dictonary of Zoology. Really useful if you spend long nights awake wondering what a trochophore or a acrochordidae is.
