I want to share something I saw yesterday going to work. I was traveling up a 4 lane highway, when I saw a huge dog wandering in the middle. Cars were slowing and swerving to get out of the way. I turned my car around, went back and stopped. This dog was huge!! I am not a dog person, but it looked like a great dane and bulldog mix!?! As I opened my door, this dog came right up to me, sweet as could be. I stood there on the shoulder for awhile trying to figure out what to do. It was obvious he was someone's pet, but had no tag, no i.d., no nothing. While I tossed up the idea to call animal control, the owner showed up. He told me the dog wandered away. When I asked why he did not have an i.d. tag, the owner told me that it always "got in his food" when he ate, so he took it off.
I know this is a reptile site, but we all share a love for animals. PLEASE make sure your pets that can wear an i.d. tag have one. Remind your friends, too. It could be YOUR pet that someone has to turn into animal control, and later, possibly put to sleep because of your lack of concern.
Thanks for reading......

I know what you mean. All of my Dogs are from people that no longer wanted them. Two from the pound, one from some friends of ours and the newest little girl off the side of the road. I couldnt bear the thought of here getting hit. Or being eaten... I live in a small town and all kinds of things come down from the mountain to get food. I places signs up at the stores and nothing, have had her almost a week. Looks like she is staying. The would be put down forsure, our pound is over its limits on dogs. And of corse she isnt fixed and thats our deal... Some people.

I would have to strongly agree with you, I always stress to people I know to make sure that their animals have tags, and to spay or neuter them.

LOL It wasn't Lori....it was me. Generic titles with no description as to the contents are a pain to find later when they drop off of the top of the list and become a waste of webspace.

They stay in heat an average three weeks. Having them fixed should take placed while they are around 5-7 months old. It's easiest if you get it done before their first "heat." Hope that helps.

i thought about giving and ID tag to my boa, but then i realized that even if i could get it to stay on, i'd have to fish it out of his shed every time, so i gave up.

I find it's much easier to teach the animals our address and phone numbers, just in case - andm oh yeah, how to dial 911.

It irks me to see people too irresponsible to have a tag or leash on their dog. Both are illegal in most areas.
Over the years, I've had to shoot a few dogs because of their owners' failure to control them. Quite a shame that the pet has to pay the ultimate price for the owner's irresponsibility.

*sigh* "It gets in his food when he eats" ?? What kind of excuse is that?
For those who don't necessarily want to have their dogs wearing tags, there is still an option. You can get your dog microchipped. The chip is implanted subcutaneously, usually between the shoulder blades and once the insertion has healed you won't even notice its there.
Most animal control/humane societies are now becoming equipped with chip readers which will allow them to scan the dog to see if its chipped. The chip has an ID# thats registered with one of the registration groups out there and they can find the animal's owner via the ID#. One of out pups was chipped when we got her and is registered so that if (god forbid) she should manage to get out and be picked up, she can be returned to us.
This technology is being used on all variety if animals - dogs, cats, birds and though I haven't heard anything about it, I'm sure it could be applied to reptiles as well.

That technology is avaiable and has been used
to i.d. pythons in Aust.
I have contemplated the idea myself even, it is not
unknown for people to target snakes from private collections
for the unlicensed market here.

Yep, it's becoming more and more common here in the US as well. As a matter of fact, it is legally mandated in some areas that certain species must be chipped.

I agree, it sounds good. But it still is not as effective as a good old ID tag. What if the person that found the dog does not know it has a chip? Is it a homing beacon of some sort? More info and a link would be great. Thanks

If you take the dog or cat to a local vet or spca they can scan the animal for chips, they contain the owners name etc. I believe the scanning is a free service for a found animal.

Of course, microchipping is reliant on found animals being reported to a humane society or an organization equipped to scan the animal, but it is getting more and more common. Every vets' office I've been to lately has had flyers and posters about it up.
Here's a link to the AKC's Companion Animal Recovery page with more info on microchipping.
