I have seen Doggie diapers at PetsMart - maybe that would help with your problem. I believe there are procedures that can be done to spay a dog while she's in heat - you'll have to check with your vet, but its much more costly. We've just been waiting it out til our girl finally comes out of heat to get her done. I feel terrible that we didn't manage to get it done before her first heat
General Public Service Announcement:
Unless you're planning on breeding your dog (yes I know dog is technically male, but with the language filters I can't say the appropriate female term as well), there is no reason to not get them fixed asap. Also, unless your dog has been health certified AND is exceptional at both agility AND conformation there is no reason to breed your dog - just being "registered" is NOT a good enough reason. Heck, conformation champions regularly produce "pet quality" pups all the time, so being from a Champion bloodline is not an excuse.
There are a world of health problems that domestic canines (male and female) have as a result of being left intact. Not only are there direct health problems, but for males it is _extremely_ stressful to live their lives intact if you're not using them as a stud. Dogs can smell a female in heat from 10miles or more away with no wind. Can you imagine how completely and utterly stressed out a dog would be having to deal with the drive to procreate and not be able to do anything to relieve that stress? (Ok, some of you do but I wouldn't wish it on anyone...)
Ok, I feel better having gotten that out of my system.
Good luck with your new pup 1sttimesnakeowner
