Reptile sleep.

Just some interesting reads on how we (humans) view reptiles and reptile brains.
SLEEP SYLLABUS
Evolution of Sleep Lecture
Should these lead to a discussion, great I love talking about thought process of reptiles and brain patterns. Here is a start, let me know what you think.

Re: Reptile sleep.

Thanks man. I browsed through them real quick but there is some neat material in there. I'll go through them more thoroughly tomorrow morning.

Re: Reptile sleep.

Thank you both. As usual another discussion brought this up, so I thought I would post some of the evidence I had and see where it goes.

Re: Reptile sleep.

This is fascinating, raze. No evidence of REM sleep in reptiles? (though the second study said there was in some lizards). I just assumed my snakes were dreaming of big fat rats while they sleep. It never occurred to me that maybe they don't sleep at all or that their sleep is very different and serves a different function. Article states that sleep may have evolved separately in mammals due to heat regulation.

So much about reptiles is a mystery and we attribute human qualities and motives to their behaviors. It's great to try and understand their physiology better. Excellent post--thanks!

Re: Reptile sleep.

Slightly off topic, but I know my Siamese cat has REM sleep because he makes little sucking motions in his sleep (gee, I wonder what he's dreaming of?) Usually he does this when curled up sleeping inside my shirt! lol

I never see my snakes twitching. I have often wondered if they ever sleep.
