Most Docile?
Hey folks, I'm curious about something...
Now, I would just like to state beforehand that I know every snake is different and some snakes have been given bad reps that they don't entirely deserve...
But, that being said, what seems to be the most docile and easy going constrictor(s) in your experiences?

Ball Pythons. Corns are good too. Mine was a real piece of work for about a year though. She's real chill now though

Well, I'm gonna say my blood python, even though he huffs and puffs, he puts up with me and doesn't have a nasty streak in his body. Also, ball pythons and BCI.

Re: Most Docile?
I see BPs are on pretty much everyone's list. I wasn't aware they were so laid back I always figured they were more popular because of their manageable size and fairly easy housing requirements.
What about burms? The albinos are popular at social gatherings and they seem to be very relaxed when held, though I have read a few threads/posts that seem to expose a few of their more aggressive moments. Is that something they generally grow out of?

Re: Most Docile?
I'd say my ball pythons are really docile, all my boas are very quiet as well, save my big BCI's had his hissy-fit moments when he doesn't feel like being bothered, my two-year old hasn't shown me an ill-tempered sign yet! Out of all my snakes, my Mexican black kingsnake is the one who does his best to tag me when I invade his 'space'.

I was going to say "grow into; is more like it". That's not right either though. I suppose any snake can have a bad day. Who knows what set of circumstances will trigger it? The only difference with the giants, would be the magnified result of a bite or constriction. In my experience, my 4 boas don't seem to even have the capacity to show any aggression. I personally believe their disposition is heavily influenced by heredity, maybe more so, than environment/handling. Some examples of notoriously aggressive species, can be very easy to handle. JMO

Re: Most Docile?
I find this question, and the answers given, very interesting, and the Blood Python surprising.
But among all the species mentioned which has never been recorded as striking a caretaker? The Rubber Boa has never been documented as striking a caretaker under any circumstances. Even fresh caught WC Rubber Boas can be wrapped around your wrist and they will just sit there like jewelry for a long time.
I’ve actually worn a rubber boa through an entire hour long program before asking the audience if they knew what snake I had had out since before they started arriving and still had out as I was ending my program.
They are somewhat rare in collections and thus far I have not gotten my two to breed but they are by far THE MOST DOCILE snake I have ever had contact with.

Re: Most Docile?
Really interesting stuff! I was always under the impression that burms were a little bit more aggressive as youngsters. And I didn't know much at all about Rubber Boas. Keep the info coming, folks. I'd love to know everyone's opinion on this subject.

Re: Most Docile?
I havent had personal expieience with all types, but I would say that it doesnt get much more docile then my hogg. (bci) a bp is docile, but as I have noted, they are a little more active. My bci is super docile, and will basically just "chill out" when you take her out. and when she's in her tank, she just sleeps. kinda boring really, but we love her anyway.

Re: Most Docile?
Well all depends. I have some of the meanest ball pythons in the world. I also have really mean boas, Among other things. All of how it is raised and how many generations it was CBB. If a normal ball python has been bred in captivity for 20 generations then it usually will be super tame. Just like Burms. CBB ones are usually really nice after a few weeks of handling as babies. But a first generation baby can be really mean its whole life.

Re: Most Docile?
I have a TX Rat snake that is surpose to be the Meanest snake in Texas and she has only tried to tag me once and that was 30 minutes after I got her. Like the post before said it depents on the snake and in her case the amount of handeling. She's a sweet heart but gets handeled atleast once a day.

Re: Most Docile?
yes this is true. Depends on the snake. Some can be very mean and others of that same species can be pure sweathearts. Take good care of you snake and i'm sure everything will be okay

Re: Most Docile?
and another thing I noted is just useing commom sense. there are times when any snake is likely to strike, regardless of how docile. as I posted above, my bci is super tame, but right after she eats, its a little sketchy cause shes usually pretty feisty for like a hour, and I feed her in a seperate tank, so I use one that has a locking lid and I will either leave her in there til she calms down or I will be super carefull not to do anything stupid, pick her up kinda like as if picking up a hot. I may get a snakehook for when she's bigger and could really do some damage.

Re: Most Docile?
I would have to say the ball python in general but I think that most novice constrictors should be just as docile as the next with proper living quarter and handleing. I have had no problem with any of my snakes except my jungle carpet python but he is still a juvenile.

Re: Most Docile?
My BP is a doll. She's never hissed, tagged me, or even attempted to strike at me. She has even let me remove a piece of aspen from her mouth without using tweezers. I just open her mouth (its like she knows exactly what to do...doesn't fight me at all) and remove it. This has only happened a few times from her burrowing, but she 's really sweet about it. She can be shy though sometimes around new people, but she opens up after a little while. And I've never had a problem with her feeding. She is a little pig. Overall I couldn't ask for a better snake!
