the BOI on faunaclassifieds.com....busted system?
it seems that the BOI on fauna is a totally flawed system. it gets under my skin every time i skim across some of it. when it involves people i KNOW are good folks and people i KNOW would go out of their way to be fair, it really gets to me. i also find it funny that someone is questionable after one "less than perfect transaction".
i blame wal-mart. people feel like their "no receipt needed, no investigation needed, just bring it back" attitude should apply to everyone. there is a guy on there now that is complaining about a baby ball python being a picky eater after he supposedly received it in good health. it was a high dollar morph, which probably has more to do with it than anything, but it's like buyers refuse to assume ANY responsibility because "at wal-mart, i can get another one". this guy had the snake 60 days before complaining about a thing, and whether he was truly wronged or not is not an issue after that long. if the animal wasn't eating 10-14 days, he should have mentioned it. if keeping it was an option, he should have given a weekly update, keeping up with the weight and documenting anything that may come in handy.
even victims aren't given free passes. nowadays, with the things a simple cell phone can do, you should be able to document about EVERYTHING that is relevant to a conversation. i record all my phone calls, save all my emails, take pictures/videos of anything that may be pertinent later IF there is a dispute, etc.
just no excuse for it. on the BOI, a LOT of people are just no capable of caring for certain animals, they get in over their head (probably after being told they're in over their head), and try to get SOMETHING out of it and the consequences can ruin people's lives, INNOCENT, GOOD PEOPLE'S lives. if people do a search and there is 2 threads about you, one saying you're a good guy and another one that says "my snake died and i paid $1500", well, who is probably gonna say "that's the guy for me".
just a very flawed, illogical setup. good idea, but there are usually 20 pages involving 50 other people who "have no horse in the race".
and of course, stupid people will live and die by it, like someone without a thread or without a bad thread are incapable of doing you wrong.

Re: the BOI on faunaclassifieds.com....busted system?
I assume you are referring to John Light JLExotics and his deal with WindyCityHerps that carried over on other forums...
Up untill this latest thing, I'd not heard anything negative about JLExotics, this was the first.
From my understanding the buyer (windycity) CLAIMS JL sold him a Ball Python morph for $1700. The snake was 100-150grams, he said one thing on BOI and another on TRR as far as weight...
The animal allegedly never ate in the 60days windycity had it, he forcefed it 2ce, it later died.
The buyer claims that JL KNEW the animal never ate, claims it never ate for JL, and insists JL should refund the money because JL never disclosed the fact the snake didn't eat on its own..
Whether or not the snake ate on its own should have been clarified beforehand, it MAY HAVE eaten for JL and just NOT for this other guy.
I don't know either gentleman, but I agree that I probably wouldn't refund after 60+ days, especially if the buyer never mentioned a problem untill AFTER the snake died. Also 60days seems like a short period of time to forcefeed 2ce, that is a LOT of stress.
If I felt the animal was 100% healthy when I shipped it, I probably wouldn't refund the money.
Just my .02, and I do see what you mean, unless you are very good in written communication, just about anything you say online can be taken and twisted and used against you in a personal campaign. That's typical anywhere online.
The BOI is flawed, but overall I do think it's an ok system.
The way I look at it, if I see one or two slight imperfections or incidents like this one with JLExotics with a seller, I would take the time to speak to the seller to get a better feel for the individual in which I am dealing.
On the other hand, if there are a slew of bad dealings with that individual listed on the BOI, odds are I won't send him a large amount of money and my faith he will make good on the deal.
I don't think the BOI "makes or breaks" you if you attempt to conduct your business professionally. Most people realize you can't please everybody, and there are those out there who just want something for nothing.
If I found a snake JL had for sale I was interested in (and my husband wouldn't KILL me for buying another snake) I wouldn't hesitate to business with him based on this one incident.

No worries,
There's a message board called Faunaclassified.com where buyers and sellers can register to post dealings with other buyers and sellers. "Board of Inquiry"
Sort of a "Good Guy/Bad Guy" system, or a "better business bureau" of reptile enthusiasts.
