Snake puree
I know this will disturb many of you, but I thought you should know. A number of snakes were starved (abused), studied then put in a blender in the name of science! Here's the link:

Re: Snake puree
that's interesting. science is often abusive, since it tests things at times that are simply not possible under optimal circumstances. if we learn something from it that helps later on, then it could be seen as worthwhile.
i hate how snakes are all painted as "ambush hunters". most snakes will actively search out food. cottonmouths are amazing to me in the way they hunt and even seem to learn when and where the best hunting places are for different times of the year. a lot of cottonmouths are fish eaters almost exclusively and fish normally have specific seasonal habits that cottonmouths seem to pick up on. if they sat at the water's edge and waited all the time, they'd most certainly starve. i've witnessed them come to the same places during the same times of year because the fish were spawning or the water level forced them to deeper pools and the snakes would go to the fish, not wait for the fish to come to them.
snakes are far less "opportunistic only" than some believe.

Re: Snake puree
That's OK Tom. It's a story everyone who loves snakes should see. I'm not sure we can make a difference this time, but it pays to know how little some people care.

I'm sure that's how they justify it. Will it help find a cure for (human) cancer or anything like that though? I think anything learned was more academic than practical.

Re: Snake puree
Marshall D. McCue
There is how you contact him.
I posted a link to the other site's post and this: "Very disturbing how reptiles can be treated, I am so glad you exploit that".
Someone should send him a link to this post as well, I feel there will be many more posts here about this sick reptile cruelty.

Re: Snake puree
wow, in one thread everyone wants a kid's head crushed in as retribution, and now it looks like this will become much of the same.
look, everything isn't about looking for a cure for cancer or a cure for anything. science is about understanding things, and sometimes, to understand them, you have to do things that aren't humane.
if snake people really want it to be them vs. the world, then they might as well give up now because the world will win. i'm all for anything that fosters understanding for these animals because that's why they are vilified, people don't understand them.
this seems to shed a bit more light on what they're capable of and how they react physiologically. it may be VERY useful down the road in terms of conservation, who knows, but it's certainly not something done out of morbid curiosity.
a lot of you folks are simply hurting your own cause. way to go, shortsightedness never hurts a thing though, does it?
and before we prove once again that snake people are mindless idiots, maybe we should be careful about the emails sent to this guy. it's a piece of cake to come off like an angry animal lover with no understanding for anything of value. if we keep coming across as fanatics then we'll continue to be treated as such. maybe asking this guy questions would be far more worthwhile than telling him he's a big meany and that he should be starved and pureed to see what it's like.
this is really getting out of hand. the herp community can NOT WIN THE US vs. THEM BATTLE.

Re: Snake puree
I think I must have missed something, but was there a really good reason for putting a snake in a blender? Oh, besides boosting sales for the new Snake-O-Matic?

in the article it says this: After the 168 days, McCue chemically euthanized each snake and pureed it in a blender in order to better conduct chemical analysis.
maybe it's all a sham and they just wanted to blend up some snakes.

Re: Snake puree
You guys aren't getting it...
Stop jumping the gun here and going chasing after this guy with torches and pitchforks. Sure, it may be a bit disturbing but its in the name of science.
When I'm field-dressing a deer that I've killed, I always "play" with the internal organs and find it really cool to look at them, feel them and kinda mess around with them a bit, especially if the deer even has some fatty net-like tissue around the stomach. I find it cool whenever its cold outside and the steam from the body heat of the carcass rises up from it as I'm field dressing it, and muscles are still twitching even shortly after death. When the deer is skinned, butchered and the legs cut off, I play with the legs and feet to watch the tendons and crap moving around and how they work. I find it really cool and fascinating. Call me morbid, but that's the way I am.

Re: Snake puree
Maybe they were all sitting around watching the old Saturday Night Live commercials and saw the one for the Bass-O-Matic. Does anyone remember that one?
P.S. Munge I appreciate your point of view, even though it's unpopular, and I don't necessarily agree. Sometimes we do have a lynch mob mentality here.

Re: Snake puree
Funny how sites like this make a difference
The Jane Goodall Institute
these people lead to things like these
Public Health Service Policy | The Humane Society of the United States
The Animal Welfare Act | The Humane Society of the United States
it just seems reptiles get left behind in these laws. If it had been kittens or primates there would be far more public out cry. There is a line between caring and fanatical. E-mails are concerned reptile lovers arsonists are fanatics.

the whole community has a lynch-mob mentality MOST of the time and it's to be expected. not sure if the community has noticed how things are not getting better as far as legislation goes. that lynch-mob mentality is gonna seal the deal for the "bad guys". not hard to make people look crazy if they act crazy. when the majority sees these "dangerous" animals and the crazy people who owned them, game over.
i have been personally excited about the uses for venom in medicine. it gives these misunderstood creatures a small sense of worth that they didn't have. it adds to the overall picture of them. on its own, it's not enough of course, but the more we understand and make snakes appealing to humans, selfish or not, the better it is for snakes.

Your right it is cool to starve and play with dead things
Medical Experiments of the Holocaust and Nazi Medicine
From body snatching to bequeathing
Funny when it is humans everyone feels different about it. When will us humans truly appreciate other life forms? The food chain is one thing, every animal has a right to eat but for amusement, sport or off the wall science experiments, I am sorry but I can not agree.

you think mice enjoyed being envenomated just to create an LD50 chart? you think mice enjoy anything they're put through, even being fed to snakes?
you can not take that stance without being totally hypocritical. this isn't some kid in his garage doing experiments.
