Man Pays Big Tax Bill in Coins, $1 Bills

MUNCIE, Ind. - A landlord said he wanted people to see the pain of his property tax bill when he hauled $12,656.07 in coins and $1 bills to the county treasurer's office.

Cary Malchow said the heavy load left him "out of breath" but it was worth watching three cashiers working overtime and guarded by sheriff's deputies on Monday to count every last cent of the semi-annual payment for his home, business and rental properties.

"I did it so people can physically see what $12,000 is," said Malchow, who has staged other recent protests to draw attention to Indiana's property tax increases.

It took 75 minutes to count out the cash, said Delaware County Treasurer Warren Beebe.

"They were fast, they were hustling. They're used to counting money, but of course that left other people standing in line. It was an awkward situation," Beebe said Tuesday.

Malchow's protest prevented the office from making its daily bank deposit, costing the county an estimated $1,135.90 in interest that would have otherwise accrued overnight, Beebe said.

Years ago, just after getting my license, I got a parking ticket. I went to pay for it and all I had at the time was the coins (mostly pennies) that were in my consol of the car. As I was counting it out on the counter, the woman at the court house got a snotty attitude and said, "Ya know, I don't have to take that." Being young and naive, I didn't have a clue what her problem was, so I offered to take it to a local store and see if they would give me $2 bills for it. She then changed her attitude a little (knew I was just a dumb kid) and told me that some people did that just to be smart. I said,"oh, well I wasn't trying to do that, but really I think you have to take it don't you, it is back by the government and you would be held responsible for me not paying my fine." Another quick attitude change and she swept it all off the counter without even counting it, slammed it into the draw (without even sorting it, lol) and just glared at me. We parted ways without another word and from then on I just used the drop box on the other side of the street. (which sometimes was hard to get those little envenlopes in there with all that change in it, )

I can't see abusing the employees at the tax office because you disagree with Government policy/laws. State and federal government employees pay taxes just like you do.

I don't see how it is abuse to ask them to do the same job they would be doing anyway. The only difference is that instead of counting money for lots of people they had to count it for one person.
If anyone suffered it was the people who had to wait in line.

I lost a bet a while back on a cowboys game and owed a friend 20 bucks so for 2 weeks i wore the same pair of dirty socks, i worked in a machine shop out side at the time, and paid it all in pennies in the sock, he was real upset and didnt want to take it. but he did..... and in the end i won.

My grandmother had done that . She paid all her taxes in change casue that is all she had at that point . They turned her away and told her she had to exchange it for bills . They ended up going on and taking it because the lady that was taking care of her manager came up to teh lady and told her it is the same as bills just takes longer to count and you are going to do it . The bet on the cowboys game . That was a good one
