1 - I can gurantee with all certaintly that it was a harmless species.
2 - That is why there is Animal Control
3 - What idiot shoots at a snake with a single projectile round (i.e. standard pistol/rifle round)? There is a reason that mini shotgun shells for pistols are called "Snake Shot".
