Great MMA interview
Check out this hilarious interview with Nick Serra, brother of the UFC welterweight champ Matt Serra, and Mike Varner on their upcoming CFFC fight. I watch Nick train everyday at the academy, and he means business! I can't wait for this fight! Nick's been working real hard on his standup, but Varner better hope it doesn't go to the ground, Nick is a world class grappler, the second American Black Belt under Renzo Gracie. I'd like to smack Varner for what he says about NY/NJ, but I think Nick'll take care of that

Re: Great MMA interview
Joe.. he is just trying to get into Nicks head - don't sweat the talk. He will being laying on the mat watching those lights fade away as the choke eases him into dream land soon enough... As long as Nick keeps that chin down and watches for that right over the top.. he will be fine. Varner is outclassed in this one..

I really think so too. Honestly, how can you go into a professional MMA bout with such little experience on the ground? Even guys with the best TD defense in the game still have some level of proficiency in BJJ, even just for the submission counters/defenses. I'm gonna predict a victory by choke-out submission for Nick Serra via triangle in the first round.

Re: Great MMA interview
triangle? wouldnt nick have to be either over powered on the ground or taken down? in order for varner to be in the right spot for the triangle?

The guard position in BJJ is one of the reasons why it is such an effective and learned martial art in MMA. Just because you are on your back doesn't mean you are in a bad position, especially when you are a BJJ black belt and have a guard like Nick Serra There are other places you can set up a triangle from, but the guard is most common. Nick is known for the occasional flying triangle too...check it out on youtube

Brian.. you don't have to overpower the willing. Nick will be looking to get to the ground. He will school that guy on the ground from any position. Unless Varner is a lot stronger then I think he is, Nick won't spend much time with him in guard, so I would expect a triangle.. I would imagine Nicks top game will come into play.. or maybe get his back.
Joe - You would be surprise how many guys get into MMA without ground game (or w/ only ground game). Even worse is the guys that lie about their skill, build themselves to be something they are not.. and end up getting matched w/ a stud.. only to be slaughtered - Nothing like that happening here though.. or.. mmm.. maybe?
