I may not be ol for a few days time. I had a nice lil visit to my home today from our social services dept in this state. Apparently someone filed a complaint that my children's safety is of a concern due to the fact that i keep reptiles in my home. I of course didn't let em in as yet when they came..told em I needed to speak with my atty first..hehe. BUT when they asked what type of snakes I keep and I started out with Boids...they interupted me and asked what that is...arghh. I wound up telling them to get someone that is knowledgable on reptiles and then come back. So they are coming tomm/today to see what it is I keep here in snakes. They are not concerned on the other reptiles is seems ..it's the snakes they seem to be centering on....arghhh This should be interesting to say the least !
So depending on how much time all this bs takes up....

Oh, Lori!! That is ridiculous!

I am afraid of that here as well. People can be so stupid. I bet the person who complains about your childrens' safety is the same one that lets hers/his ride their bikes without helmets in the street and play with strange dogs, and stay at a daycare with noncertified employees..... Argh!! I do feel for you. With all the good you are doing for those children, too. Man, people make me angry!!!
I am rooting for you and saying a few prayers (couldn't hurt lol)
I do wish you all the best, I know you can beat this. You are too good for this nonsense!

Lori.. my suggestion is this; Get your lawyer over to your house tommorrow before they enter. Make sure he is present. Even though this might not be cheap, it may be what keeps your children and/or reptiles at home with you. As much as I hate saying this, they CAN take your children if they think its unsafe.. reguardless of how safe you keep the snakes. Also I would consider getting rid of any pictures of your children holding the larger snakes, and goto home depot in the morning and installing a dead bolt on the room where the reptiles are kept.
If you hand them matches, they will light your fire. I've seen children taken from homes because the parents didnt pickup dog droppings right away. So, 10+ snakes, some being huge.. couldnt definatly be trouble.

Remember, owning snakes like boids/hots is not much different than keeping a loaded gun in your house.. it might be safe, but it is still DEADLY if handled wrong. I noticed your children are still young.. I'm not going to preach safety to you as I'm sure your snakes are setup safer than mine.. but you do realize if one of those larger boids WERE to get strapped onto a kids neck he wouldnt have a chance in #$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^& fighting it off.. as some grown men cant even do. I'm just saying this because I'm sure social services will also.

Once again, its not cheap.. but its better than losing your chilren or reptiles. I wish you the best of luck, Lori.. and I hope everything works out for the best. If they do threaten to take your children if you dont get rid of the snakes.. I'll be glad to take a couple off your hands and return them when everything is straightened out or find some experienced friends to help out as well. I know your kids are more important than your reptiles..so I'll be glad to help.

Yeah, that dead bolt lock sounds like a good idea. Keep the key around your neck or some where the kids can't get it. Man, this is an issue. You need to plot a seed in the neighborhood and find out who it is. Maybe have a close by friend from another neighborhood come over and act like you are crazy, maybe that person will tell them there the one that called. Must preach safety now though. SOMETHING WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM. NO MATTER WHERE WE GO THERE WILL ALWAYS BE IGNORANCE!!!! Heck, put a sign on your fence or something. I don't know, I know you have a pic of that big surinam outside on that tree. Best of luck and let us know what's going on!

Its peoples general fear of snakes that causes these incidents. There are so many vicious dogs out there that can chase you down and do some serious damage or death but put a little snake near by and everyone freaks, maybe some aren't so little but they're not roaming the neighborhood. Good luck Lori, hopefully someone with some knowledge will come and see how wonderfully you care for your children as well as your reptiles.

Wow Lori. That's quite the pile of crap someone decided to dump on you. It really bugs me the way people judge w/o knowing the facts. All I can say is good luck to you and if there is anything I can do, anything at all please let me know.
Best Wishes,
Meg

This deeply saddens me. I have met Lori and have seen how she deals with the kids around the snakes. Although you may see pics of the kids holding snakes, you never see them holing anything big nor anything dangerous. And she is always on them about being careful in how they aproach. Lori does not deserve this at all.

I really do pray that everything goes well. I also hope you can find out who reported you to social services. After all these years of keeping reptiles someone turns her in now. I bet you will find out that it wasnt a "concerned" citizen at all but someone you have #$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^& of recently.

Good luck Lori. We wish you the best..

Lori I hope very thing goes good for you.

I don't get it. Its okay for people with children to own big dogs that roam around the house, but if you own a big snake that lives in a cage thats bad? I even read a news artical once about a german shepard killing a newborn, because it was upset about the new kid in the house. I don't rember them saying anything about child endangerment, or manslaughter charges, but if it was a snake that killed the baby i'm sure every chage the attorny could think of would be filed. Thats just really silly.

end rant

Lori I hope everything turns out ok! The deadbolt on the door is a good idea. Another suggestion I have is if you have not already placed all the snakes and reptiles in one room, do it tonight! Having one room with a lock on it will look much better than having the animals spread throughout the house. Another thing you should do is keep locks if possible on every tank, and make sure to get clips and such to secure EVERY tank. I hate to say it, but if I were you I would move anything over 9ft out of my house pronto. Let us know what happens... and I am curious as to what suggestions/comments they give you as well. I am not sure if it is a good idea to tell them you rescure animals or not... you really need to contact your lawyer.

The thing that really p*ss*s me off here is the thought of Lori having to go to all the trouble of moving snakes, fitting locks etc... If there is no violation of the law going on here then there really should be no issue at all.

Also, the fact that somebody has gone to the time and trouble of reporting this officialy would suggest to me too that it's somebody you have ticked off recently.

Next time you see a dog take a dump on the sidewalk, get on the phone and report the owner. As far as I am aware, that IS against the law.

Good luck Lori, although you shouldn't really need it in this day and age...
