There has been a bill proposed to ban exotic pets. This has been done in both the House and Senate. Of course it is back by the HSUS.exotic pet bill WE need to be very carful of this. Get out the old pen and paper to write our representatives. This way is much more effective thatn calling or e-mailing. If you do not know who these people are you can go to the two sites that are listed here.
Senate
House of Representatives

They can't ban exotics....Michael Jackson has giraffes in his back yard...and he has more money than they do.

I don't know....... I guess I agree with the article, tigers and lions should not be kept as pets in private households IMO. Does anyone know if this proposed ban includes snakes? -Juggalo

I hope they just get stupid and place a ban on all exotic animals...See how long that lasts when they realize that their goldfish aren't exactly native to the DC area and I also don't believe that there were any Pomeranians here when the Pilgrims landed....I agree about the big cats and other insanely hard to properly house animals. I wouldn't mind seeing a federal permit requirement for burms, retics, african rocks, and anacondas....too many of these animals are being enjoyed through their youth and discarded as rubbish when their owners get a taste of reality in how big they really get.

I know their argument in saving their poodles and pomeranians from exotic banning will be...but they are domesticated...that's when I will jump up and scream...My snakes are domestic too...they just don't have ears for Christ's sake...can't blame them for not coming when I call them...Are you really going to stand there in front of everyone in this country and discriminate against the deaf? Cause this is what it's really about isn't it Senator? You don't like deaf animals... Before you know we will have United Boid College funds and govt grants for better housing our pythons avaialble.

I honestly believe there should be some sort of license to have any type of animal. I'm not saying you should have to go through the same extensive requirements to keep a Boa as you do a Cobra. But I do think people should be required by law to take at least a one hour "this is how not to kill you pet" class that would cover the basics of husbandry for the type of animal you are considering purchasing. Apon completion of the class you would get a certification, petshops could not legally sell pets to people not certified to have them. I think this would help, a lot of the herps I see sick are mostly a result of people's bad husbandry. Not utter neglect. I do agree 100% people should research the animals they are getting, but this would insure the lazy people learn good husbandry (or buy illegally). LOL, yeah, I think this is going to happen soon too....... Hey what's that pig doing flying around way up there in the clouds, and there goes Satan on his brand new ice skates! -Juggalo

AS it is written now it does not include snakes. But this is a slippery slope. I agree that the animals listed need regulation. In the bill making process there are admentments added. It would be very easy for them to add snakes. Reptile owners are not very cohesive. We need to make sure our elected officals know if they add snakes to the list that we will run them out of town.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. They have all been made fully aware of how rare a snake related death or injury is compared to a dog related death or injury...Even that 10 times more people die in America each year from choking to death on ball point pens than of snake bites. Our snakes are not in any danger of confiscation or bannishing. Don't you think that these guys up there trying to make laws that benifit and help the majority get bombarded with enough irrelivant rants? How about we try a little less hard to draw attention to ourselves?

I worry everytime the government tries to regulate anything. It starts out rational, but almost always turns into the absurd.

I'm going to have to agree with Juggalo on this one. I also agree with Sir Julius in what he contends should be regulation permission for the residential/private housing of large boids as pets. It seems to me that the larger boids are more likely to be taken in by a rescue worker than any other snake, and the rate with which they are dying or being neglected at the hands of inexperienced non-snake lovers trying to gain societal status is too #$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^& high. I think you should have a short appointment with somebody who can run you through the husbandry of whatever type of snake you happen to have. I don't think there should be any strict regulations, per se, and I don't think you should have to go through the hassle to get the permit as you do now, b
