I just signed up with the Air Force and am scheduled to leave in the end of may but i had a question about keeping pets...i know you cant have them with you during your basic training or at tech school, but are you allowed to keep pets, my red tail mainly, in any on base housing? Really hate to have to get rid of the little guy. I have someone to take care of him till after my tech school until i find somewhere to keep him. Thanks alot guys! Hey Quick
I know that you can't have pets of any kind in the barracks but if you live in base housing you can. There is a difference between the two so if its the barracks then no! But you can get your own place!!!!!

I know the barracks where I use to live....
They allowed small things like fish and lizards/geckos.
We knew way ahead of time when they would inspect.....
So what they don't know did not hurt them

Well, since I'm back home from my current deployment for a few hours, I'll field this question.

In short, you will not be able to keep any type of reptile in either the dormitories or base housing. Depending on your commander, the penalties can be as severe as an Article 15.

The soonest that you'll be able to keep any animal, other than a small aquarium with fish, is when you move off-base. As a new airman, you won't be eligible for any housing allowances unless you're married. Generally speking, you won't be able to receive BHA until you hit either SrA or SSgt. It varies from base to base, however, with some bases offering the allowance to TSgt and above only.

One thing to keep in mind is the current state of world affairs. We are in the midst of fighting a war. Even as a 3-level, you'll more than likely be going on frequent sightseeing tours of the deserts of the world. This doesn't make keeping reptiles impossible, but it does necessitate that you have someone who will be able to care for your snake with little or no notice.

Yeah, it's not allowed. You will not have any exotic animals in the barracks or housing!! We just had a guy get caught with his ball python's in the barracks. Now there at my house and I live on housing. He didn't get in trouble, just a don't do it slap on the wrist. If I get caught I'll just say I didn't know and they'll tell me to get rid of the snakes (won't happen) or move out in town. But they don't have inspections in the housing down here as of yet. I got it all set up so I can throw a blanket over all the setups and turn it into a picture display. Key is don't get caught. But that's how it is for us. It must differ inbetween branches of the DoD.
