Classified?
Ok this is in no way a personal attack, but I have to say something here:
Noticed this on classifieds tonight:
Classifieds
If there is one thing I really have issue with its with false advertising..
Nick a few things:
Nessy & Val were purchased from Reptileauctions.com at 50.00 each and both were kept in "horrible and dirty cages" by their previous owners, Nessy was fed live according to your posts.
When you got Nessy, it was around the first part of this last December.
You still had Ralph your other rescued boa that was VERY sick with what you suspected as RI, and he was emaciated... He shortly died, and you posted about needing to fill up his empty cage Need some advice on getting an new addition.
Then you got Nessy as a mate for him from Reptile Auctions for 50.00, even though he was in really bad shape, and she was from a questionable background and not ideal breeding weight.
You weren't even sure then that Nessy was a female according to this post made on 12-04-06 New Boa Pics
Then on 12-09-06 you had her probed by someone who mentioned "plugs could be interfering with an accurate probe if it were a male and he had been cooled." Females & Plugs? So you still aren't 100% sure on sex of the "female" so I wouldn't list it as a breeding pair.
You never took him to the vet and he died. Did you ever get a necropsy?
Nessy was NOT quarantined from Ralph..
Here are pictures of Nessy's cage on top of Ralph's.

When you got Nessy,

I kinda understood why she was kept in these conditions as the people where extremley scared to death of her but they had her since she was a baby? So why would you now stop taking care of her and now begin to be afraid? Anyways they both have a good home.

You listed her as

Sometime in January/February you got Val (the male) and again NO quarantine, from the first day you had him he was kept in the same room as Nessy, and you had them out snapping pics of them together.
Aww they like each other
Like I said, I'm not trying to attack you, and you should be able to explain what is going on without anyone else attacking you, but I just don't think this is right. You are listing your rescued redtail boas as a "healthy breeding pair" for 400dollars, and you haven't had them even 6months, and they weren't quarantined. These are animals you stated you "will never get rid of."
Now my issue is with the fact that they are not healthy, by all practical accounts, and I don't think its right to take advantage of buyers who may not be aware of their previous background just so you can get new stuff for your car..
Now I know we all have times we need money, and I understand that..
Perhaps if you edited the classified ad to include more on their background?
and the fact that you are not 100% sure on sex and weight..

Re: Classified?
false advertizing is one thing, but advertizing something that COULD be harmful to the animal?? breeding animals to early could kill them. trying to advertize them as that, is just waiting for something bad to happen, and its going to attract the wrong people, who get the snakes for the wrong reasons.... thats a red flag for me.
I am not even going to get into "disposable" pets.

Re: Classified?
I stand by my post in classified section, also.
I also want to add and this is NOT an attack,Nick, selling your snakes for car accessories is selfish IN MY opinion, animals are not disposable and replaceable.
I wish Nessy and Val the best of luck and I hope that you do not get any more animals for a LONG time.
**These are my opinions and thoughts

such a shame.......like mentioned in the classified, I feel bad for yoda now too! Everyone needs money. I am a motorcycle fanatic but I'd never sell my boas to get some extra pocket change for my bikes. They mean far more to me than a mode of transportation

Re: Classified?
wow, Nick, you were one of the 17 yr olds that I would point to when the others got on here and were acting irresponsible and say that most 17 year olds weren't able to keep big snakes responsibly, but you were an exception to that. I am not attacking you, but dude, are the snakes in good health? You've had them in your collection for quite a while? Huh, I got my RTB at the beginning of December and still consider him a new pet.
And really, if you are going to do something like this, why would you post it here where everyone knows the rest of the story, because you already told them! That's like going down to the barber shop, telling everyone how you got this car that had problems, then coming back later and posting a for sale notice claiming the car was a classic. I thought you really cared about your snakes by the way you posted about them. What happen?

Re: Classified?
Nick, I am disappointed to say the least. I have come to love Nessy and Val, and I thought you did too. I'm so sad you are selling them. Also, the price seems inflated; BCI's are selling for $89 each around here. I wish you would consider giving them to someone that would give them a good permanent home. Some things are more valuable than money.

Re: Classified?
Nick you now i like you, but you are developing a bad pet keeping pattern here.
To everyone posting here, please dont let this thread get out of hand.
AND think about this. Would it be best for the animals if he DID sell them? Maybe encouraging him to keep them would NOT be the best advise!

Re: Classified?
No I agree Nick, if you don't want them, you should definitely sell them.
They are your snakes to do what you want.
I'm am disappointed that in all your posts you have endorsed quarantine and encouraged people to seek vet care, and generally given out good information/advice to other people. However here you don't appear to be following the advice yourself. You can't give advice if you don't believe in it.
I don't think it's fair to the members of RTB or those browsing classifieds to list them as a "breeding pair", when in truth, you don't 100% KNOW their sexes.
Insinuating they are perfectly healthy snakes which initially came from bad homes, when you haven't had them but 4months, is not fair to your prospective buyers either.
If they were proven sexes, had been evaluated by a vet, had fecal exams, a quarantine period, and a longer time in your collection, I could almost justify the price.

Re: Classified?
I am not encouraging him to keep them.If he wants to sell them,I say maybe they will get someone who has a stronger understanding of the responsibilty and commitment that goes along with owning/keeping reptiles.I do believe rehoming them is probably a good thing in all acuality.
I do not want this to sound like I'm "lashing" out because I do not intend it that way but people that value their herps so little that they will sell them for "stuff for my car" only add to the problems in this hobby that we,the people who have dedicated so much of ourselves to these animals(be it a rescued reptiled or a surrendered reptile or a purchased reptile),face everyday.
The important thing for Nick to do is to ensure that Val and Nessy are placed in a great home, even if he suffers a financial loss(meaning if he doesn't recieve $400 or even close to that)finding them an outstanding home is what he should focus on,then the money he will save in rodents and accessories for the snakes he can put towards his car....then he's happy and the snakes will hopefully be in a new happy home.Of course, this is my opinion and it might fall on deaf ears but I felt these were important points.

Re: Classified?
Let's take it easy for a minute. I see it like this:
The pair shouldn't be offered for sale at this point in time. It's my personal opinion, which means little to many, that no animal should be sold prior to a thorough workup by a qualified vet. Additionally, the pair should not be offered as a breeding pair, nor should they be labeled as being ready to breed. Any animal of unknown background or origin should be highly scrutinized prior to breeding, if it should be bred at all. Some will argue if the background is unknown there should be no breeding. There's exceptions to that, I believe, but I also don't see this situation as one of those exceptions. Additionally, anything being bred should be well established, and well established for a significant period of time; more than just a month or two. I think the add needs some serious revision, with clear information on the background of both, health, and a clear disclaimer that neither has seen a vet.
I'm always concerned when I see people flipping animals. No need to name names, but some know who I'm talking about...
I also feel he has the right to do as he wishes. Maybe he decided he doesn't want to get into boas. Maybe he wants to focus on Iggy's. Maybe he has other things to care of, and realizes he can't properly care for these two. Maybe he just wants the money to get stuff for his car. I'm not crazy about that idea, but I do think he has the right to do as he pleases, provided all information is accurately portrayed to potential buyers.
Nick, you're a pretty good kid. Don't let this be big deal or a big hang up. I hope others can feel the same way. You made a bit of a mistake. Just step up to the plate and do what you can to correct it, learn from it, and prevent it from happening in the future. In my opinion, this situation doesn't change how I view you. How you handle it will shape my impression, though. I'm confident you'll do the right thing here. We all screw up from time to time.

While I wish them the best, I also wish the best for Nick. Nick, get another one whenever you're ready. You just learned you need to think out your purchases and look much further down the line. I've been wanting another herp for the last 6 months, but I just narrowed it down to 3 species. The actual purchase probably won't be for another 4 to 6 months. That's tons of time to think out purchases, prepare with proper equipment, cages, etc., and make a very informed decision. I don't think it needs to be a LONG time before another addition. It just needs to be long enough to make a good decision.
You made a mistake, kid. Brush it off, and let's all move on. We're all allowed mistakes from time to time. This is how we learn. And please, just consider everyone's comments as them passing on their experience and education to you. Cheers.

actually, while im upset at seeing him do this, i would rather he DID get rid of ALL of his animals. people like that have no business whatsoever owning animals if they are going to drop them like a hot rock at the latest "cool" thing.

Re: Classified?
And I stand corrected. Thank you to those who have clarified the situation for me. Nick........I just don't know what to say. This stuff needs to stop pretty quick. The shipping of animals and constant new homes is very stressful. On top of that, any animal coming or going needs a vet trip. If some of the basics can't be provided, it's best to not get into anything. I've got more to say, but I think I'll leave it at that.
