What odd foods have you eaten?
Over on the “Herp Related News” forum missvandal posited the question, “has anyone ever anything out of the ordinary?”, in response to the fact that sea turtles were likely being poached as food.
I thought it might be interesting to bring here rather than get off topic on the herp news forum.
Sooooo ;
What do you think is the oddest foods you have eaten?
Is there anything edible that you would not eat that might be considered odd?
Personally, being into experimental archeology and primitive cultures as well as taking pride in my ability to live off the land, I have eaten many grubs beetles ect which I could not identify. I have also had the privilege of eating with still semi primitive peoples in South America where a lot of strange things are eaten to supply the animal proteins necessary in the diet of a Hunter Gatherer society.

Re: What odd foods have you eaten?
Not sure to the extent you consider "odd", but growing up taking "survival" hiking/camping trips in the Everglades, I was exposed to some fare that folks don't normally eat. I've had snails, elderberry flowers, cat-tail tubers, cabbage palm tubers, dandilion greens, custard apple and some other plants I can't remember the names of. Of course, fish that aren't marketed, wild oysters, clams and crabs.
Almost as important as food was learning about plants like citronella which is a natural mosquito repellent.
One of my insructors was so good at this that everyone claimed she could be dropped naked in the middle of the glades with just a knife and come out fully clothed and 10 lbs heavier.

Re: What odd foods have you eaten?
I have eaten pretty much everything in the nature of wild game including bear and raccoon. I have also eaten pig heart, calf brains, sweetbread, etc. I had beef brain tacos in El Mirage, AZ once.

Chicken Feet was probably the weirdest thing I ever ate...a lady made them for me in Portugal. I won't be disappointed if I never have them again.

Sure. It wasn't very good - pretty greasy and real gamy.

A lot of the daste depends on the age and sex of the coon, what it has been feeding on, and how it is prepared.
I got a couple of young boar coons last fall that made great meatloaf.

I don't think squid, octopus, etc. is all that weird, myself... but I have had it all. Even squid jerky with spices from our local japanese store.
Maybe you had your alligator prepared differently, because the kind that I had(in stew) was greasy and had that weird chewy/slimy texture like bull testicles have. How was yours prepared?

Re: What odd foods have you eaten?
I ate squirrel in my kitchen... where else do you eat it? I mean, I guess you could eat it where you killed it, but the amount of spices you have out there is pretty limited.

Snails. They are a French delicacy. Go figure. Also grew up eating pigs feet and black eyed peas.

Xeike, I'm not sure I wanna know what circumstance you were in that you ate grubs, worms, and crickets. I think you must have been a reptile in a former life (lol).

Well, having lizards around, so were the bugs. I heard that a lot of them didn't taste half bad. So I started killing them and cooked them up with some of the dinners I was having.
The wood grubs were truly disgusting though, and not worth trying, ever. And heck, in former lives I think I was the Green Man or the Earth Mother. It would makes sense, all things considered. LOL
