I was just wondering...
Why do people like to keep GIANT constrictors and/or venomous snakes? is it fun to have a pet you know can kill you? personally I dont think big pythons like Burms, Rocks and retics and others like anacondas should be kept as a pets as they can reach 20ft and can easily kill someone. Venomous snakes can kill someone with one bite so really what is the "fun" in having these as "pets" knowing if you screw up you can die?
Personally I dont think they should be sold at pet stores and should be kept in the wild or in zoos. I would like to see the point of view from people who own them I see some points in the debate forum but not reasons why people have them. Really what do you do with a 200+ pound snake that is 20ft long? I've seen how you handle a hot but I dont really want something that tends to try and bite you every chance it gets...

I've never understood keeping hots. I never would. I guess some people just like that kind of stuff.

Re: I was just wondering...
Different people like different reptiles. when the time is right I will keep a burm no doubt about it. with hots there are some very nice looking ones around. it all depends on the keeper and what they perfer.

so you are willing to give it a 10'x6' at least room all to its self? plus still have room for all your other pets?
because those giants need and deserve more then a little box to live in...

Re: I was just wondering...

death is part of life! for every action there is a reaction. for life then there is death. we just have to deal with it.

Re: I was just wondering...
wow thanks for letting me know I thought we lived for ever =P
so you rather risk getting killed by a giant/venous snake then old age with a safer sized/non venomous snake?

Re: I was just wondering...
thats why you need to be a responsable owner and only handle big snakes like that with enough people.. its a lil thing called common sense.

Re: I was just wondering...
I'll never really understand keeping hots and I suppose you have a point with keeping large pythons but I guess it's to each their own. I would love to own a burm or an anaconda. But I'm too small and really thinking about it... idk why I really wanna... I suppose cause they're beautiful creatures.

you are just beating around the bush though, I am asking why people would want to keep such a dangerous "pet", with common sense you can do a lot of dangerous things (I am a machinist, I stand in front of flying metal chips all day).
Dont forget the time you have a brain fart and something bad happens...

Re: I was just wondering...
why would I own a burm..well plain out yea the are dangerous but wow I love how they look and everything about them. and also would be a great addition to my educational programs I do. well let me ask you this..why do you keep reptiles at all..any reptile can be dangerous! people keep what intrest them plain and simple. I know alot of people that have no place to own a large body snake or hots have them to be "cool" but thats not alot of the reptile community.

Re: I was just wondering...
It's called risk management. Many dogs we keep as pets have the potential to kill us AND our children, but we keep them because we consider the risk "low", so the gain outweighs the risk. We accept risk when we drive, walk across a bridge, eat, fly on a plane, almost anything we do.
People keep big snakes and "hots" because they (hopefully) know the risk, evaluated and decided to accept the risk.

I can see owning one for education purposes. as for owning reptiles in general because they can all be dangerous that is also beating around the bush, as I am asking about these snakes, I have no freaking clue why someone would want a 7' monitor but people do...

Re: I was just wondering...
why do we accept the risk? why do you accept the risk of driving your car? Are you a parent? if so why did you risk having a child? life is nothing but risks. We have gave you reasons why.they may not be the reasons you want to hear so tell us what you want to hear.

Re: I was just wondering...
I think its because people like them. Some hots are incredibly beautiful. And as far as large constrictors, we have 2 burms. And 2 small children. Do I worry? NO! I like the power these animals have and we are safe with them. I know that they CAN kill. But I don't believe that we are careless enough to allow that to happen
