education vs. occupation
Just curious:
If you got any higher education (not just college...appreticeships, tech training schools, etc all count!) are you currently in a job that uses that education?
I know a lot of folks go to college for one thing but end up doing another....just curious what your experience is!

Re: education vs. occupation
I went to college, failed miserably, entered the workforce, and now I do pretty well.

Re: education vs. occupation
I had a similar experience to Morti. I didn't finish college, but I did get a bunch of certifications. Now that I have some work experience, I'm doing pretty well too.

Re: education vs. occupation
I picked up degrees in History, Archeology and Anthropology and retired from teaching History. If I could go back I'd go into the Biology fields instead and would still be working, I think.

School of hard knocks, and YES I use it..lol
J/k I had some college and no I don't use it. Should have gone into a different field I guess. Herpetology, perhaps? Doubt I would have burned out on it like I did Criminal Justice, Business and Accounting..lol

Re: education vs. occupation
No college here, and I am a full time Unix/Linux administrator and also do some programming at my job.
In a company of 150 employees I am the ONLY person that didn't go to college.
FYI, feel free to debate this in here as much as you want. The rules of the site allow for Non Scientific debate to occur in "Just Talk".

Re: education vs. occupation
Oh, I forgot..I went to cosmetology school as well..LOL
I use that a lot, cutting my family & friend's hair and doing my nails..lol
I think education is vital, I really do, but I don't think a lack of certain education should be held against someone either.

Re: education vs. occupation
I do not think you have to go to college to amount to something, but I will go on record as saying that education is valuable, in and of itself, whether you are working in the field in which you trained or not.
I received a Bachelor's degree with majors in Economics and Financial Management. After some time in the work force, I entered law school and earned my J.D. I have since left practice and now own, along with my wife, a veterinary practice. I can say with certainty that my legal training and experience has been invaluable in setting up and managing this business, buying property, dealing with employee issues, environmental issues, accountants, etc. Could you do it without the legal education? Of course, but I feel that my education and background give me a definite leg up.

Re: education vs. occupation
I would go to college if it wasn't so politically influenced. I want to go to learn, not to be taught some political ideology from the right or left...
Did you guys ever see the Pen and Teller episode where they went to a college campus and asked students to sign the "Ban Dihydrogen monoxide" petition. Man I was laughing so hard when I saw that

I think that when I make my first million, I am going to buy a vet practice... So I can say "Oh yes you will make house calls."

so many people signed it. It just shows that some people will sign anything if you use the proper wording.
Basically they went around and told people that more people die from "Dihydrogen monoxide" then some other things. If you think about it, its true (drowning etc) but still funny that these kids paying for a 20k or more year education didn't even know what it was.

Re: education vs. occupation
I am a graduate school dropout (Counseling Psychology) with a B.A. in Psych that I never did much with. Eventually I went back for a massage certification. The liberal arts degree was worthless as far as income is concerned.
BTW, the most brilliant and successful person I have ever known is the guy who founded my massage school. He never went to college.

Re: education vs. occupation
I remember (barely) what it was like to be just getting out of high school....it's a miracle that anyone can pick an occupation for life at that point. figuring out what to study in college or any other educational path at that age is really difficult - especially since you usually have not been exposed to actual jobs except the ones you see on tv!
education is wasted on the young and inexperienced! LOL!
