I am trying to buy a new vehicle and have been turned down buy almost every dealership in the austin area. Reason being is I have absolutely no credit and my credit score is... I have no score. A Ford dealership told me I needed a $10,000 down payment. Another said I needed a co-signer. And another said I'm pretty much screwed. Geez... I hate this poopy!

We didn't need to know you suck! That really blows Jesse. All of them require you to have a co-signer down here credit good or not.

I feel ya dog. Been there myself. When I first came to the US, almost no one would look at me b/c I had no US credit history. The only way I got a vehicle was a buy here, pay here lot and I had to make weekly payments or every 2 weeks if I paid the first 2 in advance. And I paid through the nose for a car.
If you have no credit, you need to get some. Find someone that you can give $200 for a credit card with a limit of $200 (secured credit card) and use it to pay for your gas, then make sure you make all you payments on time. That's a start. Unfortunately, car dealers only look for long term (in excess of 12 months) payments on a large sum (in excess of $3-5K) when deciding if they'll extend you credit for a car or not.
I have learned the hard way that your credit history is one of the most important things you can have. Any young people reading this thinking it's no big deal if you miss a credit card payment, what's an extra $10 tacked onto your balance, think about your credit history. One blemish isn't so bad, but trends/history of late payments will cause you a financial train wreck down the road.

Hey Jesse! Just thought I would give my .02..... I am an assistant branch manager for a financial institution and, unfortunately, I see this often. It's not necessarily fair, but most of the time no credit is as bad as bad credit. My suggestion would be to find a co-signer and go for it, regadless of the rate (for now), you can always wait a year or so and refinance if the rate is very high. A downpayment helps, but some dealerships don't require it. I hope you find something soon

Good points Megs!
Some things that car dealers do a lot is to have first time buyers sales.
Maybe that could give you another option.
Maybe you just suck!

I sold cars for 10 years...there are a lot of first time buyers programs available and usually with decent rates. They will want to see cash down though because when they do it with no dp, the repo rate is extremely high with first time buyers. They also usually want to put you in an inexpensive new car....but sometimes will go for really low mileage program or certified used cars.

I feel you, man. A year ago, I had to find an apartment - fast. See, I was living with my bf at his mom's duplex - she was living on some place way out in the boondocks with her bf, then they got in a huge fight, snd she told Cody (my bf) and I that either I had to move out in 2 weeks, or we did, because she was moving back into the duplex. It was a pain in the rear getting an apartment with no credit, but we managed. The funny part of the story is that Connie (Cody's mother) didn't move into the duplex until July. *blink* I have many fine explicatives to describe her.
Anyway, to the car thing. I used to live in Round Rock, and I have a friend down there who got a Dodge Neon for payments a teenager could handle. I don't know if he needed a cosigner or not.
Apparently, just *having* a credit card, and not using it, help credit. He did that, and now he has really good credit (well, that plus his car payments).
I plan on getting a credit card soley to use for RodentPro orders, hehe.
Oh yeah! Saturn of Austin's used car thingie is really nice, too. Another friend of mine got her first car there, a used one. They were apparently REALLY helpful with her getting a loan and such. Again, I'm not sure if she needed a cosigner or not, but I know she could handle the payments working parttime on $7.00/hr. I thiiink she had a maybe $1,000 down payment, but I don't know if it was even that much.

As previously mention, Snakepool, you are definately not alone. I think i'd have to have a co-signer to pay cash for a car.
