1) "Poisonous" snakes. EVERY time I hear anything about rattlers, cobras, etc, it's POISON. Not venom. I would think that at least AP would get this right.

2) The only time they have ANYTHING on snake owners, it's bad. Like, people using rattlers to kill people. This makes the general public think that ANYONE who keeps ANY snakes only have them to kill people. So irresponsible.

3) "The rattler that was not only ready to kill, but murder."

Who wants to get together with me and do an informative, responsible show on snake keeping for Animal Planet? Cause all we're getting is bad publicity.

This is an issue of mere semantics, and is actually a non-issue. "Poisonous" is not entirely inaccurate, as venom is, by definition, a type of poison. Both poisonous and venomous are acccurate, although venomous is more specific.

I have seen some good pieces on Animal Planet. Unfortunately though, their negative pieces are often sensationalized and therefore are more memorable.

I knpw which show you're referring to, and you have to figure the context in which it was used. The show was a documentary about a man who attempted to murder his wife via rattlesnake envenomations. "Murder" was stretching it a bit though, as snakes don't kill out of malice.

They lost ALL of my respect when they put on the Pet Psychic...

Now I try hard to find the odd good show and avoid the "EXTREME" shows and the 1 million repeats of the funny videos...

Agreed on AP... we've written them countless times on their sheer inaccuracy and misrepresentation of reptiles in general and snakes in particular. All we have ever gotten back from them is the typical form letter auto response. I just can't see how they take themselves seriously when they promote a show like 'the pet psychic' - for gawds sakes...

Thankfully, they do have a couple... Corwin, O'Shea, Croc Hunter... though they may not always set the 'best' example... but then again thankfully we also have National Geographic...

I don't know if it's just the ol' quest for ratings that has them on this negative reptile kick or what... give the people what they 'expect' seems to be their motto... should be called 'dog and cat' planet... as that is what is always featured in a 'positive' light.

Hmmm. I've been jumped all over whenever I slipped and used "poisonous" instead of "venomous." I'd gotten the impression from this site that only "venomous" was correct. Like when someone went to the zoo a while ago and took a picture of a poster that said "know your poison" about snake venom, and everyone mocked that poster oodles.

I thought poison was injested, and venom was injected? And to call one the other was something that people should know better than to do?

I watch AP ALL the time. It's the only channel that doesn't get all info-mercally when I'm awake. Other than between 4-8m, I usually watch AP. I've never seen any shows on snakes as pets. Well, except for the one I saw last night about the people with pet rattlesnakes using them to kill people. I love watching their shows on snakes in the wild (just ask the bf what happens when their show on Pythons comes on, lol), but when it comes to responsible pet ownership . . . nothing.

And on that "snake murderer" thing, I saw it on a show about some guy was hiring some hot keeper to kill his mother via snakebites. So they apparently use that phrase a lot.

But snakes, unless it's food, aren't "killers" or "murderers," y'know? The way they phrased it, it seemed like the snake was as eager to 'knock off' this old lady as the guy who hired the snakekeeper to do such.

Bleh.

Cat and Dog planet, indeed. And sometimes birds.

hey I don't wana burst your bubble but i love AP. It is my fav channel , i watch it allthe time. I do agree with you that the pet pysic is dum as #$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^& and there are way to many reruns on funiest vids. On the other hand people like the croc hunter and jeff corwin are very educated and i feel they desperse their know how very well. I have learned a lot through reading and posts like this , i have also learned a lot frim people like steve erwin and jeff corwin, and it sure is better than watching talk shows , game shows, soaps , and many sitcoms. Atleast the shows are entertaning and somewhat educational.

I don't know whose bubble you'd be burstin here since most of us like at least one, if not all of the shows you've mentioned! LOL I have to agree with you though, I hate game shows and soap operas, now sitcoms I do once a week just to let the brain numb a bit *G*.

Frankly, I hate most of cable TV as an industry. Maybe I just dont get it...I pay money to get these channels, yet they still show me commercials by advertisers who pay them to put them on?? What a racket! And for what, so that it takes me 10 minutes to figure out that there's nothing worth watching on anyway? I'm not saying that there's not some quality programming on cable...I'm just saying that there's not enough to justify the expense. Ever since I gave it up, when there's nothing good on the 6 channels I get, I turn the TV off rather than settling on inferior programming. And it only takes 30 seconds to figure out there's nothing good on..

Even network TV is a load of...this business of ony putting on good programming during sweeps month? Is there some good reason that they couldnt put on a decent show every week, regardless of whether or not Nelson (or who ever does the ratings these days) is keeping tabs? And reruns? Ok, sure, actors deserve time off too, but you know, half a year wouldnt be that terrible to have to work...

Ok, diatribe over...well, almost

KILL YOUR TV!

Hey, you're not bursting my bubble. AP does have some good stuff, EXCEPT when it comes to snakes as pets. I do watch Croc Hunter and Jeff Corwin and I respect what they do. I just wish that I could respect the way that AP handles snakekeepers, like us.

And I don't really WATCH tv. I usually have it on as background noise when I'm on the computer or doing chores. I get really nervous if it's quiet. I can't even sleep without a fan on, even if it's on 60 degrees in my room, hehe.

I likes me some AP, Discovery, TLC, and National Geographic. I'll admit, tho, I do watch Buffy and Friends. I feel so ashamed, hehe.

You guys I have to disagree with thoes of you that (totally) dislike AP. I myself have learned lots from some of the shows on AP. Im not saying all of their info is totally correct 100% of the time BUT at least 85% they are right on the money. The info people get on Venomous snakes varies sooo much on each individual animal size locality that they have to base a lot of info on other findings. I myself think that its the best chanel on TV I rarely watch TV but when I do its usually AP anyway! Most of the shows try to teach is love for nature. And respect for other creatures. And I for one respect that. Good Television. Everyone that dislikes the shows has seen so many of the negatives that when the positives come through no attention is paid. I KNOW that many of the shows make large snakes out to be all dangerous but on the other hand Ive watched Emergency Vets and several other shows where Doctors as well as the animals owners have talked about the love that they have for these large snakes. I know everyone is always going to have their own opinion about things but always consider the alternative.
