I for one am in love with their personality in general. All Boids just seem to be so sure of their own strength that they for the most part are much calmer than say members of the Colubrid families... They are drop dead gorgeous and are quite the treat to watch... so inquisitive about everything around them. Ours have a thing for ceiling fans... just love all those scents being stirred up - what's that one... what's this one.. where's that...
Definately one of my favorite creatures.

I just like them more than I like fuzzys.
They are quiet, have care that takes some dedication and they scare off the average crook, especially when you leave giant sheds hanging in your window.

I have boas because they are cool and I can show them off to my friends. I like to take them out to places to watch peoples reactions.
NOT... I had to say that.
I guess I just like the "not so common" pets. I got tired of having the normal pets like cats and dogs. I dont want to have the same kind of pets that evryone else in the neighborhood has, I wanted to be different and have a more respectable pet than them.
Not to mention owning a boa kept those people you didnt want to have visiting you at bay.

They are magnificently beautiful -- I spend hours admiring them. Their personalities are disarming -- curious, benign, tranquil, confident. They are resourceful, creative solvers of problems -- just watch one climb a lamp pole. They are unbelievably calm; I hold them and feel my own brainwaves settling into a quieter pattern. They are snakes, and from young childhood, I've been fascinated and thrilled by all snakes, any snakes. Boas are, for our predilections, the best snakes to have in the house, so that's what we've got. They are mysterious to me; the longer I watch them, the less I feel I understand what their lives are like to them. Yet they certainly don't seem to mind us. They seem willing to live their whole lives in our view. Our boas seem to find it sufficient to sit beside something they could hide under if the need arose -- yet the need never seems to arise. The little pea brain inside that big, rubbery head is adequate to handle everything that ever comes up...
I could (I do) ramble on endlessly, and I still won't have explained myself to the satisfaction of anybody who doesn't 'get it' in the first place -- but then again, I guess if a person didn't get it they wouldn't be here. They enrich our lives.

beauty is the biggest one for me! i absolutly love everything about them!
they have the coolest faces, awesome markings, great strength!! some are pretty tame to so i do love to show them off a bit! as long as i help some one know what the real deal is!
facination on the science part of it is now also a huge thing for me. thats why i am sooo into locales n stuff, trying to do my part to keep them pure. unlike most, there i totally believe though they are boa constrictor, they do have many subspecies!!!
i tell you what, i have been doing this for a bit now and am considering a career change!
i am in the process of applying to the university of florida at gainesville- they have a great zoology program! i'm going to be a herpetologist!
boas, what ever the reason- they're a great animal!

Great topic Joe!
When I was a kid I was amazed by dinosaurs, keeping herps to me is kind of like keeping my own miniature dinos.
When I was 12 or 13 years old I wanted a dog, my mother hates dogs. No matter how hard I tried I could not convince her to get me a dog. one day I came home with one that I found, I came really close to keeping him but in the end he had to go. I understood and told my mom that it was alright, I knew she diddn't want him in the house. She felt bad for making me give him up, so she boght me a baby BCI (which was even better than a dog!). 9 years later Zeus (the baby BCI) has traveled all the way accross the country with me , I still have him and he'll always be my fav, and very important to me being my first snake.
I kep herps because IMO they are the best pets, and extraordiary animals. they are the most beautiful creatures on the face of the planet. -Juggalo

Gotta love em'... they're quiet, they don't eat all that much and they shed all in one piece. How many other pets have all those attributes as well as being beautiful and interesting to look at?

This is a good question, and one I get asked quite often. I've had fuzzies. I'm actually very good with dogs. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "He's never done that before with a stranger" or "I can't believe how well he/she takes to you". My grandfather raised Shepherds and Dobermans and I've always had either cats or dogs in the house.
When I went to college, a friend had a boa. I fell in love instantly and handled it as much as he would let me. Of course, back then, I was naive and didn't understand the benefits of feeding frozen. Other friends also had a corn snake and a rosy boa. The corn snake was pretty nice, but from what I can remember, the scales were rather large. The rosy boa spent most of his time under the sand. The BCC, well, let's just say that I was hooked.
So, I've only been exposed to these three. Pythons, well, either too big or too finicky. Anacondas, definitely not. I only live in a condo. And as to others...well, I'm just starting. Who knows where I'll end up.
I think snakes are great pets. They ask for so little, but give so much in return. And no matter what, they'll always give you a hug!

I got my first snake cuz I can only have pets with scales...allergies and all. I had played with a friends's bp and decided I could handle that, and it was a lot cooler than fish. As far as why I have a boa...pythons suck!
Just kidding...relax you big headed, egg laying, pit loving freaks...
I will admit to being something of a Boa snob...I dont like pythons near as much. Until I saw Morti's Mollucan, I haven't seen a python that I really particularly cared for at all.
Oh, and my boa is fascinated with the ceiling fan too. I put one in his room just to keep him entertained.

Like JUGGALO, I was fastenated by dinosaurs as a kid, and that instantly rolled into a love of contemporary reptiles. At the age of 12 (only a few decades ago!!!) I "kept" my first reptiles, including lizards, turtles and snakes. After keeping different genera and species over the years I finally settled down to the boas as the group I'm most infatuated with. Snakes are amongst the most modern of reptiles and yet the boas are amongst the most primative of snakes! I've also always had a love affair with the myth of dragons...and to me snakes, and particularly boas, allow me to experience "dragons" first hand.
For me the boas fit all the things I love about reptiles into one package. The size is just right...enough to have a nice beefy animal without getting too large. The shape of the head IMO is amongst the most elegant in the reptile kingdom. The pattern and color variabilities just seem to turn my crank. Their disposition I find very familiar and appealing. I don't foresee I time in my life that I will intentionally not have a boa, or two, or five, or...

I decided on a boa because my boy seems to squeeze me in all the right places!!!
Seriously though, for a beginner herper the BCI fits me because of the following:
I wanted a snake that was not aggressive
Ease of Care
Wanted a big 'en, but not too big
and those eyes, well, who could say NO I ask?
I did lots of research before deciding on him because I wanted to make sure I could give him a good home and take care of him and his needs...
So, he is settled in fine and enjoying all the squeezes he can get!
