I was at the White Plains show this Sunday and one vendor told me that they were going to stop makeing flexwatt due to too many fires caused by people incorrectly using it. Is this true? If so I am going to order LOTS of it for the future! I know Big Apple caries something called Calorie One, is that made by a diffrent manufacturer? Hope someone can answer, boy I hope they are really not going to stop makeing it .

It wouldnt suprise me,
by design flex watt cannot sustain temps over 91 degrees for lengths of time,
it was originally made to heat pipes to keep them from freezing.
If there is an acceptable substitute that has been tested in reptile apps, bring it on,
I certainly wont miss flex watt.
Even though I have it on most of my racks.
if there were a better option that were as simple to implement, I would be all over it in a heart beat.

I have a few cobra heat mat's that I love, and big apple sells their own version of them, if they are not manufactured by T-rex for them. The only difference is that they are 4 times the cost of flexwatt. I was not aware that they were only rated for 91 deg., that is a little scary if you ask me...

well, the original design was only for 91 degrees, if that has changed, I dont know about it.
I have seen scary things happen to improperly wired heat tape,
so in a sense its probably good that it wont be sold anymore.
But on another note, it can be very stable,
I have one rack that has had a 4 ft section running constantly on a thermostat (at 80 degrees)
for over 8 years now, without any problems.
But maybe I just got lucky.
