Holy cow!
So check this out. I'm sitting here at my desk, pretending to work diligently. And then BAM! My coworker next door start muttering "Oh my god....." over and over. So I cruise over there, expecting to hear some story about how she bumped her head on her desk. She's standing at her window, so I stand behind her. What do you know? Big ol' pigeon just flew right into the window. Now, I've seen them do this from time to time, but they don't end up too much worse for wear. This one was in horrible shape. Couldn't hardly walk, much less fly off. Then out of nowhere, here comes the culprit of the pigeon's downfall. A little Red Tail Hawk. He stood right on top of the pigeon, held him down for a while, plcuked a few feathers, and dug on in. I have some cruddy pics on my phone I'll post in a bit. But abolutely crazy! We're lucky to spot one in the city, much less stand less than 10 feet away and watch one eat. Just had to share!

I love it when things happen like that... A front row seat to nature.

Exactly the way I felt! Everyone else couldn't stand to watch, and I thought it was so awesome to see nature at work. It was beautiful! And I love hawks, so that always helps.

I work at a women's prison. For about two weeks last summer we had two hawks that joined our facility. They would perch on a building right outside the fence. They would swoop down and get ground squirls and pigeons. I thought it was a good example of the circle of life and all. The female prisoners were horrified when it would take its catch back up to its perch and pick them apart... Cool pic, thanks for sharing.

So is that what you do at work, pretend to work?
It is neat to witness nature like this, and you probably needed some excitement in your day!

You said that when you've seen the birds hit the windows before, that they were no worse for the wear....I've never seen one survive it! I've probably seen 7 birds hit a window and every one of them died within minutes. None of them, though, were eaten by a hawk! That's awesome!

Thanks. I was totally thinking about life cycles and all too.

Exactly. I do a great job of pretending, though. And the excitement was much needed.

I think this one was flying away from the hawk when it hit the window. Not sure, just a guess. I used to sit with my grandma and watch birds hit her sliding glass door all day long. They usually just sit there for a while and fly away.

Wow! You were so lucky to see this - thanks for the pics! I love raptors - and was thrilled when I saw a redtail hawk hit a pigeon shortly after moving down here. Had a family of them near the apartments where I was living. Hope you get to see the little guy again.
