Just curious
HI all....
Just wondering,
I was talking with someone at the bar (where i work) and we were wondering where a vet would inject a snake. Whereabouts on its body. I said probobly (sp?) somewhere on the underside closer to the head, the guy said near the head, neck region...anyone have any ideas? I said that I would find out and let him know.
we were talking about antibiotic shots...

Antibiotic injection sites seem to change yearly. First it was in the upper third of the body as a SQ injection (because of possible kidney problems), then it was lower third IM. Unfortunately, herp veterinary care is still in its infancy and we learn more every year. I just inject about halfway down into the backstrap and have had good results. Of course, you get tend to get better pharmacokinetics if you just give the injectable antibiotic PO rather than SQ or IM. The only reason that the antibiotics are injectable is because people feel like they are getting more for their money from a shot over a pill.

In the lower third, you get very close to the kidneys. There is concern over intoducing a high concentration of antibiotics near the kidneys.
