Yup Another black eye to the herp keeping comunity. All it takes is a couple idiots to ruin a perfectly safe and sane hobby and for some a way of life.

Mike, the bit about the python was a bad story written by a bad journalist. They neglected to mentiont that the family had another child die of asphixyation the year prior. I think something smells fishy about it. There was a long discussion about that case here a while back. If you look hard enough, you may be able to find it.

If I remember correctly that 11 ft python was a bit bigger than that. The whole thing is ridiculous. That article makes it seem like the boa wrapping around the woman's arm was the boa attacking. I am sure we all know that wasn't the case, just the boa trying to hold on so it doesn't fall. Just another case of ignorance running rampant!

Some animals can kill people, bottom line. grrrr, few things really fire me up but this is one of them. I'm going to stop right here before I get my blood really boiling. -Juggalo

This has been written in a manner to scare people, no wonder so many people are afraid of snakes. No doubt the owners of this snake were very irresponsible but to put the highlighted bit about the girl getting killed alongside is just there to scare. The snake obviously would wrap around the woman to feel secure, its not exactly like it attacked her but the story is written in a way to make people believe it would have.
Still, it makes me mad when I hear about people not taking propper care of their pets, things like dumping an animal is cruel, and when the animal is something that could cause harm , its worse still

............"it's hard to belive a snake of this size could escape"......................................
Yet another sign that they do not own snakes, a snake that size could very easily hide out and sneak outside if the owner was irresonsible for even 15 mins. Mine get out and try to hide the second I set them down on something.
As for the rest of the article I agree Jugg.........I better stop before I get mad. A 50 lb dog can do a lot more damage than a 6' snake.

This is along the same lines and was on the news 2 nights ago, it's just down the road from where I live. This was on the news tonight,
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2234370.stm
The report doesn't metion that the croc were kept in a suitable enclosure and were well looked after, they were removed as the guy didn't have a license not because they were neglected.

Nice way of expressing your thoughts Kolleen. Same thoughts here. Like Adam said, how many fatalities are caused by dogs and other animals a year? Nobody ever seems to look at that.

I remember the python story well. I am certain that the parents got away with murder...again. The child had no teeth marks. It is obvious that she was smothered...and then for lack of a better excuse, they blamed the python. Too bad the investigators didn't talk to some herpers. What are the odds of 2 kids in the same family being "accidently" asphyxiated within a year of each other?
