My lord!
Look at how many dogs are up for adoption in just this one web site. The numbering is by breed.
PetFinder Dogs
BTW, there is 1 Nile Monitor, 40 Iguanas...

I've bookmarked the page. I now know where to start looking (aside from my local pound) when I can finally get a dog. We can't have one at the place we're at now, and I've always said I wanted to go to the pound or a rescue society first. It's so sad, we live in such a throw-away society, that our pets go or suffer at our first inconvenience. I live in a college town, and as soon as graduation comes, every year there's a surplus of animals that were purchased as the house pet for the school year, and then dumped at the pound or released into town as soon as school is over. My bf used to work at the local pound for a while, and he said it was really sad, they had to put so many animals to sleep, because nobody was adopting, and everyone was dumping. We will definitely be 'shopping' there first when we can finally get a dog (or cat, for that matter).

there is nothign wrong with petfinder.org in fact...my friend adopted a pitbull puppy from there and its the sweetest dog...alot of peoples dogs have puppys, and poof, they have no choice but to give them up for adoption....that site directs people to animal shelters and saves dogs from being terminated and id like to give it some credit... i myself have looked at quite a few puppys from there...only reason i havent taken like 5 of them home is because my grandfather is a hairy animal nazy...thus i keep snakes...really...its not the sites fault that animals are given up, its the sites fault for finding new happy homes for dogs and other animals...rather then being euthanized. Dont be a hater to a site that is trying to do good.

I just noticed the number 2,000 beagles. It is hard to envision in my mind 2,000 beagles...
And this is just one single web site.
Q: Does the group at large believe that restrictions on breeding (comercial, private) should be called for? If these are pure-breed animals, should the comercial breeders assume some responsability?
Just talking..

That is very sad... the sadest part is that it is because most of these people are just to cheap to get their dogs fixed (which is the healthiest thing you can ever do for a 6 month old puppy)
or smart enough to keep them from roaming the streets during the day.
I used to volunteer for a shelter and my wife is a dog trainer... can't tell you how many times people go... "my dog left for 3 days and came back this way... would you be able to take the puppies?"
How freakin' hard is it to keep your dog in the house? let it run in your back yard/ park when you get home? if you can't, you shouldn't have a dog! it's that simple, black and white.
And unless it's a show dog, 3 bloodlines back... have it fixed! it'll be better behaved, healthier, and not over crowd the market with homeless puppies.
It just breaks my heart.
