now thats some good advice.
cat fish and pond goldfish,
you can buy foods specially made for them at feed and pet stores.
you can put cat fish with other larger fish, but they will often eat smaller ones.
and yes you do need some type of filtration, if its just a big tub you will need some type of biological and mechanical filtration.
This can be done with commercially available products, or made from other aquarium parts like power heads and sponges.
its not as simple as just putting fish in water, the water has to be able to biologically support the fish with the presence of aerobic filtration.
also you need to make sure the water is free of chemicals that are added by whatever water authority you buy your water from.
Chlorine, chloromine, ammonia (chemical, not organic), flouride and many other chemicals will kill fish quickly if the water has not been treated for them.
The best course of action is to plan out exactly what you are going to need, and put together a time line of when you can add what,
let the water sit with filtration for about a week before adding fish, then just add a few to start the biological processes that the filters maintain, then after a few weeks you should have a completely self supporting system, with a little intervention from whoever sets it up.
so my advice is, talk to someone at your local fish store that can help you get the things you need to do it right the first time.
good luck.

The best place to research and find out information about Catfish and Goldfish would be to research them on a search engine such as Google are something. Sounds more like ya'll are having to do a report, so your best bet would be to search them. telefrag also pointed out some good information as well.

look up the care requirements for Koi. They can be a little expensive, but they are the undisputed kings of pond fish... untill your cat eats them.

If yoy have pond Goldfish and Pond Catfish, the goldfish are the food. Once the catfish get larger, they will eat anything they can fit into their mouths.

you could also try asking at a hardware store. that's where you would go to get the stuff to set up an outdoor pond, and they usually know what they're talking about. or just look around your own neighborhood and find someone who has a pond with some fish in it. maybe think about some fish that live in the ponds around you, like sunfish, or minnows. they're already used to the environment, and would do well in an outdoor pond. if it's deep enough they could even winter in the pond. just some thoughts.
