www.corallus.com has a great page about cook's tree boas. As for temperment, they're on the same level as the amazon tree boas. Cooks are seldom seen in the pet trade, generally the boas you see labled as "Cooks" are nothing more than amazon tree boas. The only way to truly tell the difference is through a scale count. Cook's also do not have different color phases (at least none that are known) so if you see a red tree boa labled as a cooks there's a 99.999% chance that its an amazon. We have a male Cook's tree boa (zoo bred and verified through scale counts) and have been searching for a mate for him for a while now. He's pictured on my website under the boa breeder photos.

no problem their care is the same as with amazon tree boas.. one tip, if you get a Cooks or an Amazon.. be very cautious when feeding them.. they don't have the best of aim and strike at the warmest object (typically your hand) we use very looong tongs to feed ours, and they've still come a little too close for comfort a few times

Be wary if someone claims to have Cooks Tree Boas. The are very similar to Amazon Tree Boas In appearance. And allot of even reputable herp suppliers Mistake them. Almost impossible to tell them apart by appearance because both Cooks and Amazons vary so much in coloration and pattern. So far corallus.com which was posted earlier seems to be a great source of information on these little chainsaws.

I purchased a Columbian Redtail from them two years ago, I had no problems with it. I have never heard any negative feedback from them, I would purchase from them again. They are going to be at the next White Plains show (this Sunday) if you can make it there I am sure they would bring it with them for you to see it in person.

I dunno why pet dealers feel a need to lie about cooks/amazon ID....they are worth about the same amount in most cases...within 10 bucks usually. Probably more so to avoid the bad attitude reputation of the amazon moreso than to get an extra 10 bucks is all I can figure. Most true cooks that I have seen look somewhat between yellow and garden phase...to just garden phase...they do vary though like the amazons...or maybe I havent been seeing pure bloodlines....i dunno...same snake - different local....the scale counts overlap btw making them dificult in many cases to prove anything...only way to be really sure is to go down and catch em yourself....trust noone!

I think the source of the confusion lies in the fact that many older generation herpers and dealers merely call all amazons "Cooks" without any distinction. Cooks became a common name for amazons that stuck with these dealers years ago and they are either too lazy to keep up with the latest nomenclature (hortulanus)or just unconcerned about the species in general. They just see all tree boas as "Cooks". It may be also due to the fact that tree boa nomenclature has gone through some confusing classification changes over several years and has even changed within the last year!(refer to corallus.com).. I have friends who still refer to common amazons as enydris, which had been changed within the last ten years or so to hortulanus. True cooki have not been imported out of the St. Vincent Island (near Venezuela) to my knowledge in many years and I believe there are only a few older specimens around, mostly zoo stock or european stock. I would be very suspicious of claims from any seller that they have true Cooks Tree boas without documentation and/or a careful and accurate scale count!
