Oh my goodness!!
So I had a very brief but scary lunch today. Everything that had to do with electricity in my bathroom and room weren't working so I had taken out all the bulbs in the morning so nothing would blow. My stepdad fixed whatever was wrong so I put all the bulbs back in. Everything was working except my heat lamp for A'kela. So I made sure it was plugged in and all and it STILL wasn't working. Then I was playing with the knob thing because it was stuck (I figured that had a lot to do with it) and then it caught on fire!!!! I screamed so loud and unplugged it so fast. I was so scared for A'kela's life! I was digging all around the substrate looking for him but luckily he was under one of the pots in his tank just being peachy. It set off the alarm and had the most awful burnt smell. But luckily A'kela is fine and I didn't burn the house down.
Any suggestions on a safer substitute than a heat lamp?

wow...glad to hear everything is ok.
flexwatt is a great way to heat your tanks/tubs.
people also use human heat pads that you can buy at the drug store.
or you can get a CHE, ceramic heat element.

I have a heat pad already but he never really goes to that side. He just likes to burrow himself under the lamp most of the time.

The heat lamp and heat pad aren't on the same side? How do you keep a gradient?
What kind of lamp just catches on fire? was there a short in the wire? Maybe you had accidently at some point sat it down with the bulb close to or near the wire and melted the insulation? That's freaky stuff! Glad everyone is ok.

Thank you. It was so scary, especially with the idea of the sparks coming down and catching his substrate on fire.

You could always claim you were just keeping things natural. Feeding live, occasional floods and forest fires are all part of what's "natural"

The tank is so big for him so half the lamp was on the side with the pad and kind of in the middle at the same time (does that make sense?). What do you mean by gradient?
I'm not sure about the wire's haing a short but the wire never came close to the bulb.
But thank you for your concern!

I guess I need to tip his bowl of water over now so he can experience the flood! I'll just tell him I'm setting him up for life to be a real man and to be able to protect himself!
