Herp specific IM network?
So I do some webhosting on the side as some of you know and I like to play with new things such as server type apps and what not. I have recently setup a Jabber type IM server and just playing around with it a bit. I've not used Jabber much honestly but its a very robust and versatile IM protocal and there are all kinds of clients for it.
My question to you folks is to see if there would be an interest in a herp specific IM network. Yes I know there are all the other IM services out there already. If your like me you might even use just about all of them and manage them from one central IM application. This Jabber based IM connection would fit easily into most IM manager softwares.
My thoughts: First this is NOT in any way shape or form to take away from this or any web forum. My initial rough draft thoughts are to provide this network of herpers for those possibly seeking a more immediate responce or emergency type help or questions. Also group chats would be easily available on specific subjects at any given time.
Why is this better than any other IM service that you can already use? Well who knows maybe it won't be. Its just that it could be limited to herp keepers and would be supported by a site with easy and fast access to others who enjoy the hobby or perhaps need help fast as mentioned above.
If there is an interest I would need some people interested in helping to get things going, do testing, and essentially help build this network.

I am totally indifferent to this topic, but I had to vote because it's the only poll I've ever seen that has the long awaited "You're a Dork" option.
Nothing personal. Just loved the option.

I put it there...no offense taken. Even in the short time I've had polls up on a couple forums people are either for or completely against the idea. I may roll with it anyway just for a new project to play with. If it doesn't take off oh well.

Thanks for the offer, the IM service is going and has been for a few days actually. I will be looking for people soon to start connecting to it so I can try out some things. I have secured a domain name for the project but will not release it until there is actually something there and of course not before permission from the forum admins.

It's a little known fact that RTB.net has a registered chatroom or two out there...

As does probably every forum I've posted this poll at. Trust me this will be something more than chat room. And again it will NOT take away from any of the services the beloved forums are offering, and that is definately not the intent.

I have a site started and it is forum based. There is absolutely no herp discussion taking place on it. Its sole purpose is to get this project going and may seem a bit technical for some but I would still invite everyone interested to check it out and keep an eye on it for development. I have tidbits of information on it now...but not a whole lot. The first goal is to get a team and divisions going of people willing to help out. If you go to the site expecting to get info on how to try the service out you won't find it there just yet. I want this to be as organized as possible so nothing will be rushed...and who knows if there will even be a large enough user interest to make it worth while.
I'll hold off on the link untill I hear from an admin or someone who can authorize me to post it. If it needs to be previewed please PM for the link otherwise I'll just wait for the "OK".

It will be just like any other instant messenger service you use say like AIM, yahoo, ICQ, MSN, etc. But in this case the ONLY people on this service will be people with some tie or interest in herp related hobbies.
Still waiting on Admin consent to post link or if anyone can give me a name to PM I will try that.

I'm weary of "new" chat clients and even IRC clients because they are notorious for coming with back doors. I'd rather stick with what hasn't bitten me in the rear yet. If someday they go away, then I'll look for something new.

Jabber isn't "new" per se, and since its open source it has global support for it. This protocol I dare say is MORE secure and efficient than the big name services. Secondly this is not just about a chat client, one could use any number of software clients to connect to the service once I get it rolling. I personally use 4-5 different IM services to communicate but they are all managed by one program. I can have anyone from any IM service in one list. With the network I am building other people who use similiar type programs could simply add this connection so in some cases a new "client" will not even be necessary.
There is lots of good info I have linked to on the site for this project. This is quoted on one of the sites but in my own words the Jabber/XMPP protocol is considered the "Linux" of insant messaging.
Do I have permission to post the link?

Once I get the "ok" to post on each respective forum I bring this up at, I will in turn post a link on the main page back to that forum. This goes the same for any individuals websites who put up a link on their own sites. Just register at the Herp-IM site and post a direct link to your site where the link can be seen. If anyone chooses to do this before I have permission to post the link here PM me and I will give you the site name in private.
Thanks!
