Xmas is still a while away but im def going to get me something new at that time.. I'm in a debate over what though.. I was thinking a RTB but they are so common with so many people owning them i'd rather have something unusual.. i def want it to be python or boa, with a max size of around 10 feet.. My price range will probably be 300-400 bucks.. Any suggestions on what I should think about getting??? Thanks

i am going to get a carpet python at the next show (sept. 8, its almost here!!!!!!!!) and i would suggest one of those. they get about 8-10 feet max but are very slim for their size. many of the herpers in these forums have suggested that snake to me. plus their pattern and colors are soooo nice. if no that then maybe one of the arboreal species like a green tree python or emerald tree boa, but those are a bit harder to care for from what i hear.

I would suggest some type of carpet python also coastals are the largest (the record is 14 feet) so if you want to make sure the snake stayes under 10' go with a Jungle, Diamond, or Jungle DimondX. Jungles also get a lot brighter in color. if you get a juvi be aware that they have a rep to be bity, but they'll calm down with handling.
HAHAHA love the new AP pic in your sig Tuft! -Juggalo

Womas...you're talking about some serious money. Go for a Reticulated Python...

Children's Pythons are nice.
Rosy Boas are cool too.... easy to care for and stay small.

I have a jungle carpet python and love it, but what's wrong with having something everyone has? My rtb is my fav hands down. just get a pretty BCI or BCC and you'll never regret it.

Thanks.. Whoever suggested a Woma.. Lemme clear something up for you.. I'm 15 and don't got a job, all the explaination needed for that..lol, they are very pretty snakes, juss a lil outta my price range.. boaguy, a retic? poopyttttttttttttttt! I would never own something that big cause I'd end up getting rid of em because of its size and i don't ever wanna have to do that.. The rosy was a good suggestion, I've really been wanting 1 of those.. I might get a Cham though, that way we'd have 2 snakes and 2 lizard spieces roaming around the house..
Anyone recommend those??

I would also recommend carpet pythons. I just got my first coastal carpet (notice I stated first lol) last weekend. I absolutely love her, very sweet and really neat coloring. However, the coastal is on the big side and will easily hit the 10 foot plus mark. Colombian rainbows are nice (have one of those) and stay relatively small - 4-6 feet - and aren't terribly difficult to care for (much more forgiving of husbandry mistakes than the BRBs). Ball pythons are always the old standby for smaller pythons. Then there are the childrens/spotted pythons (really neat little guys that stay small). Sand boas are small boas that are quite docile and supposed to be easy to care for (don't have one of those ... yet). Rosy boas are nice, small boas that are gentle and easy to care for as well. I really like my pair of Solomon Island ground boas as well. They also stay small - in the 4-5 foot range - but most of what is on the market are imports and that presents its own set of problems (acclimating them to captivity, getting them feeding, getting them used to being handled, etc.). If you get one of these, get a young one or one that is a long term captive and hand tame. My female SIGB is between 1-2 years of age and quite nippy as she's a recent import. Of course there are corn snakes and rat snakes (dozens of colors/patterns to choose from, inexpensive, easy to care for and small in size). Yep, I am the proud new owner of a pair of corns, too. African house snakes are neat, too. Easy to care for, great eaters and a good temperment. Then there are the kings and milk snakes, great snakes as well. In fact, any of the colubrids should fit the bill of staying on the small side and easy to care for. Dumerils boas are neat (have a pair of those, too) and will stay in the 8-10 foot range fairly easily. Then we're back to the redtails. I have 7 of them - that pretty much says everything. I love the colors, the patterns, the temperment, and they're easy to care for. If I could only keep one type of snake, I'm reasonably sure it would be these guys because they are just so much fun - and they were my first snake.
Raven
A list of the current ones I keep - the rest I mentioned above that aren't on this list are ones I've looked into getting or ones my best friend has.
3.4 Bci (redtails)
1.0 Colombian rainbow boa
1.0 Ball python
1.1 Dumerils boas
1.1 Solomon Island ground boas
1.1 Corn snakes
0.1 Coastal carpet python
